An Interactive Tool to Help Students Avoid Plagiarism

Students in virtually any college course that includes oral and written assignments are confronted with the concept of plagiarism. In spite of repeated exposure to policies and guidelines, many students still struggle to fully grasp what plagiarism is, especially when committed unintentionally. In order to increase student awareness and autonomy in regard to plagiarism, Cégep Marie-Victorin’s Service du développement pédagogique, des programmes et de la recherche has elaborated a visual, interactive tool that helps students make the critical decisions necessary to avoid plagiarizing. It is available in both French and English.

Using Atomic Learning for Biopharmaceutical Training

John Abbott College opened the new Ann Marie Edward science building in 2012 providing custom built labs for a new Biopharmaceutical program. Students in this program come from a variety of backgrounds and cultures and they must be able to get up and running quickly using Excel, Word and basic project management software. I discovered that John Abbott College has a site license for Atomic Learning (AL) from a poster on the wall behind my desk. AL is a web based training platform providing video tutorials on over 200 software applications, including the ones with which my students required help. In addition to the tutorials, AL also provides useful educational resources.

The active learning methods have in common of placing the students in the middle of the learning process. Their teachers can then also think about giving them a role in the planning of the evaluation. Active learning is inspired by real-life contexts that are meaningful for the students, which can increase their level of motivation for the tasks that are suggested to them. It encourages durable learnings rather than using only their short-term memory.

Creating an Inclusive Online Learning Environment with Office 365 Teams and the OneNote Class Notebook

The Office 365 OneNote Class Notebook is my favorite online tool for distributing course content as it greatly facilitates note taking and includes the Immersive Reader, which is a great tool for eliminating difficulties related to screen-based reading. By integrating my class notebook into the Office 365 Teams application, I have developed a very comprehensive collaborative and structured learning environment allowing all tasks to be completed in one place.
