Do smartphones and tablets have a place in CEGEPs? An interview with Nicole Perreault, community leader for the ITREP Network

On January 4, 2018, the Journal de Québec published an article entitled: “Tablettes peu utiles au cégep pour les « finissants du iPad » : ces étudiants observent un décalage lorsqu’ils arrivent au collégial” (“Tablets not so useful in CEGEP for “iPad graduates”; these students notice a gap when they arrive in college”). This is one of the conclusions of a study by the team of Patrick Giroux, a professor at the Université du Québec à Chicoutimi, on the use of a tablet by approximately 80 students, as part of their high school studies. Most of them are now in CEGEP.

3D-print Technology for Smartphone-based Physics Experiments

I’m not that great at building things, which, I guess, is why I ended up being a physicist and not an engineer. As previously reported on Profweb, I have been running accelerometer experiments with smartphones to help my students learn physics concepts through digital-era equivalents of “real world” examples. With the help of students, we developed 3D-printed equipment to make these experiments more accessible to our growing network of teachers outside of our college.

I believe that it is important for students to have the ability to express themselves. Working on oral presentations plays a crucial role in helping them to develop this ability. I became disenchanted over time with the traditional ‘one shot, make-it-or-break-it’ way of managing individual presentations for my classes. More recently, I have enlisted the use of tablets and YouTube in my Humanities: Knowledge course as means of capturing my students’ oral presentations and offering them a way to improve their ability to prepare these presentations.

I will share with you my experience of a pedagogical use of cell phones in class with Mentimeter. This was a very enriching experience for my teaching in chemistry. I also gave a presentation to my colleagues during a pedagogical meeting and to my colleagues of the college network in the form of a workshop given during a thematic day offered by the ACPQ (Association des collèges privés du Québec), June 1st, 2016.

Meeting Students Where They’re At!

Kelly La Venture and Becki George of Northland College Wisconsin presented a workshop on hybrid instruction at the recent Canadian International Conference on Education (CICE) at Cape Breton University in Sydney, Nova Scotia from June 16-19, 2014. After their workshop, in conversation with Profweb’s Norm Spatz, they elaborated on their motivation for creating and teaching hybrid classes. Kelly’s and Becki’s remarks are testimonials that providing flexible learning approaches builds contentment among students – helping Quebec college students master ICT profile skills.
