I’m not that great at building things, which, I guess, is why I ended up being a physicist and not an engineer. As previously reported on Profweb, I have been running accelerometer experiments with smartphones to help my students learn physics concepts through digital-era equivalents of “real world” examples. With the help of students, we developed 3D-printed equipment to make these experiments more accessible to our growing network of teachers outside of our college.

While he was the person responsible for the course Integrated Placement (Stage d’intégration), offered as part of the 5th semester in the Electrotechnology program, Denis noticed that students had some training gaps in communication, even though this was included within the program objectives. In their placement term reports, the students had to describe 3 problematic situations. Communication skills were a recurring theme. To counteract this difficulty, Denis started integrating some communication theory into his course in order to better prepare his students.

In the industry graphic designers need to know, master, and constantly use emerging software and technologies. This is inevitably reflected in the classrooms of graphic design students. As graphic design teachers at Cégep de Sainte-Foy, in a laptop program, my colleague Anne-Claire Delisle and I have created a flexible way for our students to take notes on the computers that they all have in the classroom. We wanted each student’s notes to reflect their individuality. By coming up with their own notes, the students are obligated to invest themselves in their studies and better integrate the content.

Teaching Students to Manage Projects with ProjectLibre

ProjectLibre is an open source software that is useful for creating project schedules. Michel Bélanger, a teacher at the Collège Montmorency, and many of his colleagues use ProjectLibre for several of their courses in the Civil Engineering Technology program. He uses the software to show students how to create a project schedule by sequencing and ordering tasks with the objective of evaluating the time and cost to run the project. I had the opportunity to discuss this approach with Michel at the beginning of the Winter 2020 semester.

The October meeting of Groupe Impression 3D Montréal took place on Thursday October 23 at UQAM’s Pavillon Judith-Jasmin. This group brings together 3D Printing users and professionals in the Montreal area. Meetings are held once a month, and members can register to present projects or topics of personal interest. Their website is bilingual and a great way to find out about regular meetings which are rich in information, truly presenting developments at the cutting edge of this rapidly developing technology. Applications in education are very much a part of this trend, and Vitrine Technologie-Éducation and Profweb are pleased to present our readers with a glimpse of developments that may have repercussions in the classrooms of our colleges.

Meeting Students Where They’re At!

Kelly La Venture and Becki George of Northland College Wisconsin presented a workshop on hybrid instruction at the recent Canadian International Conference on Education (CICE) at Cape Breton University in Sydney, Nova Scotia from June 16-19, 2014. After their workshop, in conversation with Profweb’s Norm Spatz, they elaborated on their motivation for creating and teaching hybrid classes. The active learning methods have in common of placing the students in the middle of the learning process. Their teachers can then also think about giving them a role in the planning of the evaluation.
