Sharing Content Efficiently with Mind Maps

If you teach in the Québec college system, chances are that you work with Omnivox. While MIO and LÉA are excellent for communicating with students quickly and easily, they are sub-optimal when it comes to sharing large quantities material. Luckily for teachers, there are ways to work around Omnivox’ cumbersome system, for instance, with the use of mind maps. Mindmeister, a web-based mind mapping application, provides a user-friendly interface to create efficient and aesthetically pleasing mind maps to share an infinite quantity of pedagogical resources from one link.

I've never liked flow charts and mind maps. They're supposed to simplify things (I think) but I find them confusing. So when I took a Performa course by Christian Barrette, an expert in concept maps, I was really stepping out of my comfort zone. But that's when I learned that while a concept map resembles a mind map, it's much different. During the course, I had to develop concept maps I could use with my students and I became so enamoured with their potential to help students learn, that they became the subject of my master's research paper. I've since used them regularly in class and the results have been quite positive.

Owning Our History With Podcasts and Cognitive Maps

I begin each semester by telling my students that history is not something to be learned by heart. Rather, it is a kind of material that we work with. The imagery I like to use is sculpting with clay. They laugh a bit at this, but the analogy helps them to understand that they need to play with the material, as well as to interpreting and integrate it. This is how the subject matter becomes intellectually stimulating and, as a result, easier to learn.

Teacher Perception of the CCDMD

In an innovative pilot project, the CCDMD examines the results of a survey of departmental coordinators, teachers, and pedagogical counsellors done at four colleges. The sampling provided encouraging although sometimes surprising information about how the CCDMD is perceived and how its products are used. Irritants mentioned in the use of CCDMD products and IT in general should inspire reflection on the part of all members of the college network.

Meeting Students Where They’re At!

Kelly La Venture and Becki George of Northland College Wisconsin presented a workshop on hybrid instruction at the recent Canadian International Conference on Education (CICE) at Cape Breton University in Sydney, Nova Scotia from June 16-19, 2014. After their workshop, in conversation with Profweb’s Norm Spatz, they elaborated on their motivation for creating and teaching hybrid classes. Kelly’s and Becki’s remarks are testimonials that providing flexible learning approaches builds contentment among students – helping Quebec college students master ICT profile skills.

The active learning methods have in common of placing the students in the middle of the learning process. Their teachers can then also think about giving them a role in the planning of the evaluation. Active learning is inspired by real-life contexts that are meaningful for the students, which can increase their level of motivation for the tasks that are suggested to them. It encourages durable learnings rather than using only their short-term memory.
