Ready, Set, Connect! Pedagogy and Multidisciplinary Collaborators

As technology has become ubiquitous in the workplace, college students have to learn different forms of communication and acquire technology skills. In 2017-2018, Lisa Deguire and Marie-Sophia Grabowiecki, engaged their students and themselves in a cross-campus and cross-discipline project to meet those objectives. Thanks to the support of the ECQ and the Virtual Team Teaching Network (VTTN) students from the Cégep de Jonquière and from Vanier College were introduced to the concept of collaborating at a distance in a simultaneous live cross-campus collaborative debate. The project was aptly dubbed “speech and debate isn’t just for arguing” and was presented at both l’AQPC and RASCALS conferences in June 2018.

Creating an Inclusive Online Learning Environment with Office 365 Teams and the OneNote Class Notebook

The Office 365 OneNote Class Notebook is my favorite online tool for distributing course content as it greatly facilitates note taking and includes the Immersive Reader, which is a great tool for eliminating difficulties related to screen-based reading. By integrating my class notebook into the Office 365 Teams application, I have developed a very comprehensive collaborative and structured learning environment allowing all tasks to be completed in one place.

Inclusive pedagogy is a growing approach throughout the CEGEP network. Many teachers are seeking ways to adapt their teaching strategies to be more inclusive. On February 20, 2017, I attended an APOP webinar entitled: Développer des pratiques pédagogiques inclusives (Developing Inclusive Pedagogical Practices). Among the tools and strategies discussed, one in particular struck me, which was the benefits of using of text-to-speech, or screen readers, for a variety of learning disabilities (dyslexia, concussions, ADHD, etc.). I wondered about what would make documents easily “read” by screen readers and what teachers could do to ensure their course material is accessible. It turns out that it is not complicated to make documents fit the criteria of accessibility.

Video Tutorials for Teachers for the Inclusive Use of Smartphones

Teachers are sometimes reluctant to use smartphones as a tool for teaching and learning since they can be viewed as a source of distraction in the classroom. The Adaptech Research Network, which performs research on accessible technologies, spearheaded an Entente-Canada-Québec (ECQ) project to share approaches to integrating these omnipresent devices into teaching and learning. In September 2020, Profweb spoke to Anick Legault, a Psychology teacher and Adaptech Research Network Research Associate at Dawson who developed a series of video tutorials within the ECQ project designed to inspire teachers to use smartphones as part of their teaching practice.

In November of 2015, Maxime Ross, a Techno-pedagogical Advisor at the Cégep de Rimouski, published an In-depth report on Profweb entitled Le projet Chromebook et le déploiement des outils Google pour l’Éducation. In this report, he presented the main steps that led to the introduction of Google Classroom and Chromebook laptops to a cohort of students in the Arts and Sciences program (AS). This first experiment aimed to explore Google's cloud-based tools, to verify their pedagogical use and to justify their deployment to the entire Cégep de Rimouski college community. So where are things now, a year later?

As an education professor, I’ve had the opportunity to help teachers develop online and hybrid courses. One of the most common questions people asked me was, “How do I convert my face-to-face course into an online course?” The truth is, you cannot convert it. Learning isn’t like a file that converts between a .doc and a PDF and a Google Doc. We can’t simply substitute new tools and do the same exact activity. But what if we chose a different approach? What if we asked, “How do I transform my course?” rather than “How do I convert it?” The following are a few ideas to consider as you shift toward online / distance learning.

We, the Adaptech Research Network, are looking at pedagogically-sound ways to use students’ smartphones in post-secondary teaching. Thanks to funding from the Entente Canada-Québec, we have had the last 2 terms to learn more about this topic. The first step in our research was to observe, so it was back to school for Laura King as she entered Anick Legault’s Introductory Psychology class to see how she was using this technology with her students.

Meeting Students Where They’re At!

Kelly La Venture and Becki George of Northland College Wisconsin presented a workshop on hybrid instruction at the recent Canadian International Conference on Education (CICE) at Cape Breton University in Sydney, Nova Scotia from June 16-19, 2014. After their workshop, in conversation with Profweb’s Norm Spatz, they elaborated on their motivation for creating and teaching hybrid classes. Kelly’s and Becki’s remarks are testimonials that providing flexible learning approaches builds contentment among students – helping Quebec college students master ICT profile skills.

The active learning methods have in common of placing the students in the middle of the learning process. Their teachers can then also think about giving them a role in the planning of the evaluation. Active learning is inspired by real-life contexts that are meaningful for the students, which can increase their level of motivation for the tasks that are suggested to them. It encourages durable learnings rather than using only their short-term memory.
