This document is the end result of a general call launched on the IT Reps list in February 2015. The survey probed practices in distance education in the college network. Based on the answers given, Profweb asked some of the respondents to discuss the issues of distance education, its pedagogical challenges, and strategies likely to facilitate its deployment in the college network. Eight respondents participated in developing this topic. Andréanne Turgeon gathered their comments in telephone interviews and videoconferences.

As an education professor, I’ve had the opportunity to help teachers develop online and hybrid courses. One of the most common questions people asked me was, “How do I convert my face-to-face course into an online course?” The truth is, you cannot convert it. Learning isn’t like a file that converts between a .doc and a PDF and a Google Doc. We can’t simply substitute new tools and do the same exact activity. But what if we chose a different approach? What if we asked, “How do I transform my course?” rather than “How do I convert it?” The following are a few ideas to consider as you shift toward online / distance learning.

An International Project to Develop Students’ Intercultural Skills During an Internship Abroad

Starting in 2018 and for a period of 3 years, our respective colleges will be involved in the ELISSE project (E-Learning for Intercultural Skills in Social Education). This international project in social services came about in answer to an urgent need in terms of the development of intercultural skills for college and university students who were interning abroad. In addition to the field reality, the social codes and the modes of communication in the internship setting (including with the supervisors) greatly differ from one culture to the next and constitute additional factors that can cause students to lose their bearings. The ELISSE project aims to improve distance educational support in particular through the development of tools created by all of the institutions partnering in the project.

Finding the Right Recipe for My Spanish Class Presentations

Preparing students for a world that is constantly evolving is an important part of our job as a teacher. With many international opportunities for careers on the horizon, it is a good idea for students to be functional in more than one language. In my Spanish complementary course, I strive to make learning a new language fun for my students, and have started using student-produced videos as a way to apply their learning while unleashing their creativity. I am also showing them how their smartphones can be used as a tool for an educational purpose.

Meeting Students Where They’re At!

Kelly La Venture and Becki George of Northland College Wisconsin presented a workshop on hybrid instruction at the recent Canadian International Conference on Education (CICE) at Cape Breton University in Sydney, Nova Scotia from June 16-19, 2014. After their workshop, in conversation with Profweb’s Norm Spatz, they elaborated on their motivation for creating and teaching hybrid classes. Kelly’s and Becki’s remarks are testimonials that providing flexible learning approaches builds contentment among students – helping Quebec college students master ICT profile skills.

The active learning methods have in common of placing the students in the middle of the learning process. Their teachers can then also think about giving them a role in the planning of the evaluation. Active learning is inspired by real-life contexts that are meaningful for the students, which can increase their level of motivation for the tasks that are suggested to them. It encourages durable learnings rather than using only their short-term memory.
