If a picture is worth a thousand words, is a 3D picture worth a million? Late in the Fall 2018 semester I was initiated into the fantastic world of 3D painting with the Google Tilt Brush Virtual Reality (VR) software. The experience was truly captivating and left me reeling with ideas for its potential uses within an educational context.

Presentation software is a ubiquitous part of lecturing in the college network. When shared with students, the presentation slides can be a very useful tool for students, and particularly for those who have special needs. The Adaptech Research Network recently conducted a series of focus groups on presentation approaches and sharing of slides that involved students, teachers and professional staff. The team invited Profweb to a meeting at the end of the Fall 2017 semester to share their initial findings.

I’ve been teaching in the Industrial Electronics Technology program for 23 years at the Cégep de Lévis-Lauzon. Robotics have interested me for a long time and I have updated my knowledge of them through private study over the years. When the 2 exit profiles for Industrial Electronics were combined (Electrodynamics, Instrumentation and Automation), each CEGEP offering the program created its own course grid based on the 19 ministerial competencies. It’s within this context that the department introduced the Positioning and Robotics course (Positionnement et robotique) in 2008. Then, in 2014, an Attestation of Collegial Studies in Industrial Robotics was born at Cégep de Lévis-Lauzon, after we combined our efforts with those of the Cégep de Victoriaville.

Moodle Platform Moderating the CERAC Community of Practice

At the Sommet sur l’Enseignement supérieur, in February 2013, it was announced that four CERACs (Centre d’expertise en reconnaissance des acquis et des compétences) would be created within the college network. The CEGEPs awarded a CERAC were: Cégep de Drummondville, Cégep de Ste-Foy, Cégep Marie-Victorin and Champlain Regional College. Over the last year, my colleagues and I have worked to design and develop a virtual space for communication and collaboration between these centers using Moodle (LMS). The goal was to create and support an online community of practice. The platform provides a space to bring together hundreds of pedagogical advisors in Recognition of Acquired Competencies (RAC), nearly twenty employees of the four CERACs and representatives from MESRS (Ministère de l’Enseignement supérieur, de la Recherche et de la Science).

Are you feeling ready to make the move to correcting assignments electronically? Are you overwhelmed by the number of tools that exist? This article will explain one teacher’s experience with an application she has been using for several years. Anna Dera, a Biology Teacher at CEGEP Champlain St. Lawrence wanted a tool that made the transition to marking electronically simple; something that allowed her to continue writing notes, “by hand”. She began marking electronically on a laptop with a touch screen and a special stylus pen. Soon after, she started using an iPad, and in her search for an application that would allow her to continue this new electronic marking technique, she discovered iAnnotate, which has remained her marking tool of choice for over 6 years.

An Inexpensive Approach to Making Video Tutorials

Short, concise video tutorials can be an effective way to explain theory or demonstrate a concept. Students can watch the video as many times as they need and the video can serve as a refresher material for students prior to evaluations. The cost to produce a video has diminished with the arrival of a number of free software tools and services that are provided for free to users. What follows is a proposition for a short workflow to create video tutorials using open source software and free services.

Meeting Students Where They’re At!

Kelly La Venture and Becki George of Northland College Wisconsin presented a workshop on hybrid instruction at the recent Canadian International Conference on Education (CICE) at Cape Breton University in Sydney, Nova Scotia from June 16-19, 2014. After their workshop, in conversation with Profweb’s Norm Spatz, they elaborated on their motivation for creating and teaching hybrid classes. Kelly’s and Becki’s remarks are testimonials that providing flexible learning approaches builds contentment among students – helping Quebec college students master ICT profile skills.
