While observing my students in Cégep Limoilou’s Video Game Design program, I noticed their ability to mobilize a specific skill set comprising critical analysis, problem solving and creativity. As I built the generic course plan for a new course, English for Video Game Design II, I included a gamification project to specifically hone these skills, often referred to as game thinking. After testing this approach with my students in the fall 2017 term, I am convinced it can benefit students in virtually any program.

Concept Mapping: A Great Instructional Strategy That Encourages Transfer of Knowledge and Critical Thinking

A while back, in a marketing strategy course of the Fashion Marketing Program, I integrated a project where students would identify the problems experienced by a fashion retailer who was struggling. They then had to propose solutions, find objectives and strategies and create an action plan. It became a very linear project for the students: 2 assignments of 20 marks each. The students would get into groups of 5 and divide up the work, “You do part A, you do part B and I’ll do part C…” etc. Each student would summit their part and the assignment had very little cohesiveness. I even had to tell the students to at least assign the proofreading of the entire work to one of the members of the group and make sure they all used the same font. I could tell which of the students were doing the work.

The Association pour la recherche au collégial (ARC) conducted a meta-synthesis of the results of 55 research projects using ICT in college teaching in 2012. Christian Barrette presents some of the conclusions that have been drawn from this meta-synthesis. One interesting conclusion is that experiments designed to increase deep learning benefit most from the contribution of ICT. Barrette also informs us about "winning conditions" that distinguish successful experiments from others.

Cloud computing is an increasingly important part of the college experience in Quebec. With more and more educational establishments using Google Tools, Office 365 and Moodle, there is less and less of an emphasis on having computers with a laundry list of applications installed. When you can fire up a web browser and have access to a wide range of tools, it is a game-changer. The field of mathematics is also well-entrenched within this computing trend, with the appearance of cloud-based innovations in the past couple of years, not the least of which is a powerful platform for cloud computing known as SageMathCloud, which has recently been rebranded as CoCalc. Since this name change is very recent, most of the information and tutorials on the internet still make reference to the old name, and this article will use both names interchangeably.

Modern paradigms of educational research take the view that learning science, rather than being a process of learning new facts, is instead a process of adopting the norms, practices and warrants of scientific culture. A group of teachers from Cégep de la Gaspésie et des îles (GIM) and John Abbott College (JAC) are developing an online scaffolding platform, called OCLaRE, that emphasizes scientific writing, critical thinking, organization and statistical analysis skills in student laboratory reports that will be useful to science students across disciplines.

Digital Slideshows in Class

For many teachers, their first foray towards integrating Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) into their pedagogical practice comes through the use of digital presentation software (such as Microsoft PowerPoint) as a visual support for their lectures. Nowadays, these digital slideshows are undoubtedly the most common technology in college-level classrooms. This tool has become the norm and teachers who do not use it are becoming few and far between. Presentation software such as PowerPoint, Apple Keynote, LibreOffice Impress and Prezi all have interesting features (with the last two being freely available over the Internet). That said, they also contain shortcomings and traps that should be avoided. This in-depth report presents various uses of presentation software in class along with tips and advice for using slideshows within an educational context.
