When the lockdown began, what now seems like years ago, I, like so many other teachers, had to figure out a way to continue giving my course as seamlessly as possible. Since my literature courses were heavily reliant on student interactions and regular exchanges, my first focus was to find a flexible, efficient, and reliable communication tool. After seeing the success of the Discord server created by my colleagues in the Video Game Design program at Limoilou, I decided to experiment with the program and it proved to be exactly what I was looking for.

In the Bioecology Technology program, 3rd-year students must set up a research project that is spread over 2 courses, Initiation à la recherche 1 and Initiation à la recherche 2 [Introduction to Research 1 and 2]. In order to provide better guidance to our students, Barbara Augustin saw the potential of Teams for group work. We decided to maximize the use of this digital tool to centralize communications and promote collaboration between students and teachers.

This document is the end result of a general call launched on the IT Reps list in February 2015. The survey probed practices in distance education in the college network. Based on the answers given, Profweb asked some of the respondents to discuss the issues of distance education, its pedagogical challenges, and strategies likely to facilitate its deployment in the college network. Eight respondents participated in developing this topic. Andréanne Turgeon gathered their comments in telephone interviews and videoconferences.

In the autumn of 2005 during a brainstorming session, the idea of developing a real time on-line event using leading edge technology came to the fore.

Bringing More Spontaneous Interaction to the Virtual Classroom with Proximity Chat

As distance and hybrid teaching and learning scenarios have become the norm since spring 2020, teachers and students alike have come to grips with the videoconferencing platforms that enable synchronous class sessions, such as Teams and Zoom. While strategies like using breakout rooms and varying group size or composition increase engagement by changing how and with whom students interact, they cannot equal the level of agency and spontaneity that in-person interaction offers. A new breed of web-based virtual environments offering proximity chat (also called spatial chat) mimic the possibility of speaking or collaborating with one or more peers while remaining in the same virtual space as the entire class group.

The active learning methods have in common of placing the students in the middle of the learning process. Their teachers can then also think about giving them a role in the planning of the evaluation. Active learning is inspired by real-life contexts that are meaningful for the students, which can increase their level of motivation for the tasks that are suggested to them. It encourages durable learnings rather than using only their short-term memory.

Teachers’ Use of ICTs: What Do Students Think?

In the context of a research project funded by the “Fonds de Recherche du Québec sur la société et la culture” (FRQRSC), 311 students from Dawson College and Cégep André-Laurendeau were surveyed online, in French or English, about their teachers’ practices in the use of ICTs and cyber-learning. This survey allowed the researchers to collect data on the teachers’ use of technology as well as the students’ level of satisfaction regarding this use.
