Published October 14, 2019  |  Multidisciplinary

Ryan W. Moon Editor, Profweb

The Quebec college network is a dynamic place where stakeholders often work across institutional borders to advance higher education in the province. For me, there are few people that embody the network’s culture of sharing and collaboration more than Rafael Scapin, the mild-mannered intellectual educational technologist with a soft Brazilian accent from Dawson College. His vast knowledge of techno-pedagogical approaches and more specifically, his guru status with the Moodle learning management platform have made him somewhat of a celebrity in the college network! Margaret McCall Teacher, Cégep de Jonquière

As you may recall, we penned an article which appeared on Profweb in March 2016 entitled Virtual Team Teaching is Gaining Ground in the Regions. This article described the Entente Canada-Québec supported cross-campus collaboration project involving CEGEPs from Jonquière, Alma and Abitibi-Témiscamingue. The project aimed to build a virtual regional team teaching network and to initiate our students to this approach through the use of multi-site collaborative activities. As promised in our previous article, we are now providing an update on the project as the semester comes to a close.

Active learning, distance learning, and personalized learning (whether or not integrated in a flipped or blended learning approach) are pedagogical methods that need little to no introduction. The opportunities and benefits they offer have been documented in many a Profweb article or real-life story over the yearslinkr, a teaching platform and global network of teachers and students, takes these concepts to the next level while making them easy for teachers to integrate into curricula. Cofounded by Humanities teacher Gabriel Flacks (Champlain College St-Lambert) and partners Gregory Mattei, Antoine Ricquebourg and Pierre-Olivier Bonin, linkr harnesses the power of technology to remove the physical boundaries between students and teachers around the world.

Active Learning

Jean Desjardins Learning Technology Advisor, Collège Sainte-Anne
Isabelle Senécal Director of Teaching, of Pedagogical Innovation and of International Development, Collège Sainte-Anne

The active learning methods have in common of placing the students in the middle of the learning process. Their teachers can then also think about giving them a role in the planning of the evaluation. Active learning is inspired by real-life contexts that are meaningful for the students, which can increase their level of motivation for the tasks that are suggested to them. It encourages durable learnings rather than using only their short-term memory.

Bringing Some Fun and Friendly Competition to the College Classroom with Kahoot!

Terri Connolly Teacher, Champlain College - Saint Lawrence

As teachers, we are often looking for new ways to diversify and enhance our teaching strategies. In the fall 2016 semester, I was introduced to Kahoot during a library information session with my Introduction to College English students, given by Nathalie Faure, the Library Technician at our college. The level of excitement and enthusiasm was such that it prompted me to try Kahoot with my first and second year students. I can attest that Kahoot is not only fun, easy to use and engages students, but it is also a tool that can be adapted to different levels and course content.
