Like many other teachers, his class was thrown a curveball by the worldwide health emergency. When the semester resumed, Norm retooled for distance delivery by using his course website and started recording breakout room activities to get his English as a Second Language students talking again. Since my graduate studies, I have always been curious to find out if writing about something helped me understand it better. Last year the opportunity to test this theory presented itself when Vanier College created grants for teachers who wanted to do projects fostering student success. The college's objective is to help students with their study and research skills as well as with their language skills. Inspired by a project that my younger sister had done at McGill with Wikipedia, a group of teachers in Mathematics determined that using a wiki platform could help students to not only express themselves better in English, but more specifically in the vocabulary of the sciences that we are trying to teach them.

During the development of the English in Business course at Vieux Montreal, there weren't enough students in the program to create more than one group whose students' language skills varied from beginner to bilingual. Norm Spatz felt that this situation could improve using information technology. Two or more teachers at different schools could divide their combined virtual class into two or more groups according to language levels.

Profweb was invited to attend this presentation, which was organized under the auspices of the Réseau des cégeps et des collèges francophones du Canada (RCCFC). This organization has a mandate to promote partnerships and the sharing of expertise between Francophone colleges across the country. They certainly succeeded in organizing an informative and inspiring presentation, which was led by four PhysEd Teachers from two different CEGEPs: Vincent Cardinal Dufour and Kévin Ratté from the Cégep de Victoriaville, and Pascale Chamberland and François Berthiaume, from the Cégep de Trois-Rivières. The two colleges were partners in an RCCFC project to encourage the use of mobile technology in the classroom entitled Échange d’expertise en integration de la pédagogie mobile en enseignement postsecondaire.

A Practical Ecological On-Line Textbook

In order to increase students' laboratory time and consequently their success in my course, an on-line textbook (manuel-guide virtuel) or OLT is being tested for the second year. The multimedia capability of the internet has facilitated the mastery of theoretical concepts, and the project has proved to be easy, practical and stimulating. The virtual nature of the medium reduces paper use as well.

Meeting Students Where They’re At!

Kelly La Venture and Becki George of Northland College Wisconsin presented a workshop on hybrid instruction at the recent Canadian International Conference on Education (CICE) at Cape Breton University in Sydney, Nova Scotia from June 16-19, 2014. After their workshop, in conversation with Profweb’s Norm Spatz, they elaborated on their motivation for creating and teaching hybrid classes. Kelly’s and Becki’s remarks are testimonials that providing flexible learning approaches builds contentment among students – helping Quebec college students master ICT profile skills.

The active learning methods have in common of placing the students in the middle of the learning process. Their teachers can then also think about giving them a role in the planning of the evaluation. Active learning is inspired by real-life contexts that are meaningful for the students, which can increase their level of motivation for the tasks that are suggested to them. It encourages durable learnings rather than using only their short-term memory.
