Collaboratively Fostering Understanding

Since my graduate studies, I have always been curious to find out if writing about something helped me understand it better. Last year the opportunity to test this theory presented itself when Vanier College created grants for teachers who wanted to do projects fostering student success. The college's objective is to help students with their study and research skills as well as with their language skills. Inspired by a project that my younger sister had done at McGill with Wikipedia, a group of teachers in Mathematics determined that using a wiki platform could help students to not only express themselves better in English, but more specifically in the vocabulary of the sciences that we are trying to teach them.

Using LEGO to Learn About the Agile Approach in Computer Science

In April of 2019, the VTÉ (Vitrine technologie-éducation) organized a laboratory entitled Innovative Pedagogy: Play, Gamification and Serious Games in Service of Seriously Motivating Lessons! (La pédagogie innovante: le jeu, la ludification et les jeux sérieux au service d’apprentissages sérieusement motivants!) During the laboratory, there was definitely an emphasis on technological tools, but I will be focusing here on a "low-tech" way of gamifying in a domain which is, without question, very technological: computer science. See how Stéphane Lévesque, a teacher in software engineering, uses LEGO to initiate his students to the Agile methodology (a project management methodology for teams which is prevalent in business).

Are you feeling ready to make the move to correcting assignments electronically? Are you overwhelmed by the number of tools that exist? This article will explain one teacher’s experience with an application she has been using for several years. Anna Dera, a Biology Teacher at CEGEP Champlain St. Lawrence wanted a tool that made the transition to marking electronically simple; something that allowed her to continue writing notes, “by hand”. She began marking electronically on a laptop with a touch screen and a special stylus pen. Soon after, she started using an iPad, and in her search for an application that would allow her to continue this new electronic marking technique, she discovered iAnnotate, which has remained her marking tool of choice for over 6 years.

Many academic assignments require activities where students are asked to present information: they share their research results, their projects’ progress, their creations or results of their work, using a variety of tools that are both pertinent and stimulating.

This task supports students in completing their assignment. This proposed approach is generic and is presented in four steps: planning the presentation, carrying out its production, highlighting and transmission of the information. This applies to all types of presentations, whether an assignment done with a word processor, a slide show, a video or audio clip, an online publication or image or any other type of presentation, the steps are the same for all.

Meeting Students Where They’re At!

Kelly La Venture and Becki George of Northland College Wisconsin presented a workshop on hybrid instruction at the recent Canadian International Conference on Education (CICE) at Cape Breton University in Sydney, Nova Scotia from June 16-19, 2014. After their workshop, in conversation with Profweb’s Norm Spatz, they elaborated on their motivation for creating and teaching hybrid classes. Kelly’s and Becki’s remarks are testimonials that providing flexible learning approaches builds contentment among students – helping Quebec college students master ICT profile skills.

The active learning methods have in common of placing the students in the middle of the learning process. Their teachers can then also think about giving them a role in the planning of the evaluation. Active learning is inspired by real-life contexts that are meaningful for the students, which can increase their level of motivation for the tasks that are suggested to them. It encourages durable learnings rather than using only their short-term memory.
