Search for Information

The mastering of informational skills is a must. Students have access, anywhere and at all times, to a vast quantity of information. And in a near future, there will be even more information, and without any doubt, more efficient ways to access it.

Searching for information is a very pertinent, frequent and even essential activity in all programs of study. Even when search tools and requirements differ from one program to another, the process remains the same.

This skill allows students to efficiently find, choose and collect relevant and quality information when it comes to processing and achieving a production. The proposed approach involves planning the research, choosing efficient strategies, evaluating the quality of information and methodically organizing of the documents found.

Create and delete sections

Splitting a document into multiple sections allows you to vary formatting without necessarily starting a new page. In our example, we use the Word 2010 version. Note that if you use other word processing software, the procedures and location of the commands may vary but the section concept remains the same.

Changing Attitudes Changes Everything

Using universal design, the basic level courses in French as a Second Language at Dawson College, have revised planning and strategies while respecting the course specification. Focusing on students who suffer from dyslexia and dysgraphia, these new strategies have been applied to all, reducing individual difficulties as well as the difficulties of individual accommodation. Part of this change involves incorporating ICT into universal design.

The active learning methods have in common of placing the students in the middle of the learning process. Their teachers can then also think about giving them a role in the planning of the evaluation. Active learning is inspired by real-life contexts that are meaningful for the students, which can increase their level of motivation for the tasks that are suggested to them. It encourages durable learnings rather than using only their short-term memory.

Teachers’ Use of ICTs: What Do Students Think?

In the context of a research project funded by the “Fonds de Recherche du Québec sur la société et la culture” (FRQRSC), 311 students from Dawson College and Cégep André-Laurendeau were surveyed online, in French or English, about their teachers’ practices in the use of ICTs and cyber-learning. This survey allowed the researchers to collect data on the teachers’ use of technology as well as the students’ level of satisfaction regarding this use.
