At the Collège d’Alma, students in Science are required to take a complementary computer course. This course was previously a face-to-face course, however since the fall of 2016, the course has been offered as an online course in asynchronous mode. This change was a resounding success!

Teaching Students to Manage Projects with ProjectLibre

ProjectLibre is an open source software that is useful for creating project schedules. Michel Bélanger, a teacher at the Collège Montmorency, and many of his colleagues use ProjectLibre for several of their courses in the Civil Engineering Technology program. He uses the software to show students how to create a project schedule by sequencing and ordering tasks with the objective of evaluating the time and cost to run the project. I had the opportunity to discuss this approach with Michel at the beginning of the Winter 2020 semester.

I’ve been using Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) for more than 10 years now. In the beginning, the fact that I could use the software for free was what I found interesting. As time went on, I grew to appreciate their user-friendliness and their interoperability. My use of FOSS has now taken on a symbolic value: a refusal of hyper-consumerism, rejecting any restraints on the free flow of ideas caused by copyright laws and opposing the commercialisation of education.

My first experience with distance education as a new teacher

In the fall of 2017, during my first year of teaching in a college, I was offered the possibility of giving the second literature course, Littérature et imaginaire (Literature and Imagination), as an evening distance-education class. That class comes after Écriture et littérature (Writing and Literature) (101) and precedes the Littérature québecoise (Literature from Quebec) (103) class. I was giving regular, in-class courses at the same time. I would like to tell you about my experience and share with you some strategies that encourage the students’ engagement. I would like to start by saying that I loved my experience!

Because this type of cultural exchange adds great value to the career path of our students, but also to that of students in British Columbia, in the fall 2019 semester, I organized a virtual encounter to continue forging ties between these young people living on both sides of the country.
