Liberating Education, Art and Science: A Summary of the 5th Annual ADTE Conference

On May 2nd, 2018, more than 100 members of the higher education community in Quebec and international guests gathered at UQAM’s J.-A.-DeSève Pavilion to share and learn about best practices for removing barriers to the free circulation of educational resources, research, data, software and art. This important event received the support of the Ministère de l’Éducation et de l’Enseignement supérieur, and included presentations from Federal, Provincial and international stakeholders.

Researching Best Presentation Practices and Sharing of PowerPoints

Presentation software is a ubiquitous part of lecturing in the college network. When shared with students, the presentation slides can be a very useful tool for students, and particularly for those who have special needs. The Adaptech Research Network recently conducted a series of focus groups on presentation approaches and sharing of slides that involved students, teachers and professional staff. The team invited Profweb to a meeting at the end of the Fall 2017 semester to share their initial findings.

In search of pedagogical approaches that would create rich opportunities for peer learning, increase student motivation and encourage students to take an active role in the classroom,we found inspiration and innovation with the help of the Smartpen. Thanks to a SALTISE rant, awarded to us in February 2016,  we were able to begin experimenting with the Smartpen and we have observed positive preliminary results.

The active learning methods have in common of placing the students in the middle of the learning process. Their teachers can then also think about giving them a role in the planning of the evaluation. Active learning is inspired by real-life contexts that are meaningful for the students, which can increase their level of motivation for the tasks that are suggested to them. It encourages durable learnings rather than using only their short-term memory.

Digital Tools to Support an Inclusive Pedagogical Practice

Teachers’ Use of ICTs: What Do Students Think?

In the context of a research project funded by the “Fonds de Recherche du Québec sur la société et la culture” (FRQRSC), 311 students from Dawson College and Cégep André-Laurendeau were surveyed online, in French or English, about their teachers’ practices in the use of ICTs and cyber-learning. This survey allowed the researchers to collect data on the teachers’ use of technology as well as the students’ level of satisfaction regarding this use.
