On-line Welcome Sessions to Promote Student Perseverance: A Pilot Project at Cégep à distance

As part of REFAD professional development workshop in early 2018, a small team from Cégep à distance came to present a pilot project within the organization’s Tutoring Services sector. Cégep à distance offers more than 150 self-contained asynchronous courses. Even if the majority of students adapt well to this mode of training, others seem to run into difficulties and do not complete their course. Among the factors that contribute to students dropping out are the feelings of isolation, having an unusual schedule or the students perception of self-efficacy which seem to be the greatest challenges.

In recent years, we have observed a growing interest in the college network for the educational potential of virtual reality. In 2014, the Vitrine technologie-éducation presented a virtual laboratory on the topic, before organizing exploratory activities for college IT-reps in 2016 and 2017. However, we had little feedback on the actual use of this technology by teachers.

Searching for problems designed for all 3 fields of physics at the college level, Olivier Tardif-Paradis, Mathieu Riopel and Alexandre April, of Cégep Garneau, launched themselves into a 2-year project of creating new problems for the existing website by the CCDMD, Problem-Based Learning for College Physics: A Website for Life-like Activities.

Pour les enseignants comme pour les étudiants, l’organisation du travail peut être un défi pour plusieurs raisons : planification des tâches dans l’horaire, estimation des délais, gestion des documents, obtention des suivis si l’on travaille en équipe, remaniement d’échéancier lors de retards et d’imprévus, etc. Pour simplifier la gestion de notre travail, dans la Suite Office 365, on retrouve Planner, un planificateur de tâches qui devient extrêmement efficace lorsqu’il est combiné avec le calendrier d’Outlook.

Audio Feedback: Customized Follow-up for Students

When I am correcting my students’ assignments in my French or Law courses, I often feel the need to go beyond my correction codes. For me, it seems insufficient to simply mark “unclear” or “requires further development.” How can you clarify? What does “requires further development” mean? I really want to reformulate the sentence that requires clarification, and to outline the explanations in order to provide an example. It’s unfortunate that my handwriting is difficult for students to decipher. It’s also unfortunate that their copy looks like a construction site after I have finished my job of editing, crossing out sentences and adding comments, as much within the text as in the margins… That’s why I tried out a new style of providing feedback – audio feedback.

ICTs have always had a certain attractiveness for teaching students how to dance. The Dance program at the Cégep de Saint-Laurent has used technological advances in the past and is continuing the tradition by integrating iPads into the practice of teaching. Marc-André Laflamme, an Editor for the French Side of Profweb interviewed Jessika, Mélanie and Caroline. He gathered and summarized their thoughts into this Real Life Story on the use of mobile tablets in the Dance program.

Researching Best Presentation Practices and Sharing of PowerPoints

Presentation software is a ubiquitous part of lecturing in the college network. When shared with students, the presentation slides can be a very useful tool for students, and particularly for those who have special needs. The Adaptech Research Network recently conducted a series of focus groups on presentation approaches and sharing of slides that involved students, teachers and professional staff. The team invited Profweb to a meeting at the end of the Fall 2017 semester to share their initial findings.

The active learning methods have in common of placing the students in the middle of the learning process. Their teachers can then also think about giving them a role in the planning of the evaluation. Active learning is inspired by real-life contexts that are meaningful for the students, which can increase their level of motivation for the tasks that are suggested to them. It encourages durable learnings rather than using only their short-term memory.
