Active Learning Classrooms in Service of French Lit

Just prior to the student strike in 2012, the administration at our college presented an active learning classroom implementation project codenamed CLAAC (for Classe d’apprentissage actif). This initiative was part of a vast reasearch project that brought a few colleges from Quebec together with the Université de Montréal. I’ve been teaching French literature for about 8 years and was interested in experimenting with some new ways of presenting my class. I was already interested in integrating ICTs into my teaching, but I was more or less traditional in my approach. So when the opportunity arose, I jumped at the chance to get involved.

At Concordia University, I have been teaching the ENGR 201 Professional Practice and Responsibility for some time, which is a mandatory rite of passage for any student who wishes to become an engineer. This means that there are a large number of students, which seems to be growing every year. Given this growth, we wanted to see if we could consolidate a couple of sections into one section to meet the demand. The course is offered in the fall, winter and summer semesters, and each section has about 200 students. Our first experiment was with 200 students in one section who were all enrolled in the blended course. We are now regularly offering the blended course with 400 students each semester.

Back in ’99, the ink wasn’t even dry on my diploma from McGill when I was tasked with managing a project to implement a Learning Management System and oversee the creation of the very first e-learning modules for a CEGEP in the Montreal area. I had heard about this free system called WebCT made by a Prof and a few students at the University of British Columbia, and I had been tinkering with Linux for a couple of years by that point. Armed with a small grant from Industry Canada and almost total freedom to get the job done, I began assembling a small team of energetic students and subject matter experts.

Cross-Campus Collaborations Part 2

As you may recall, we penned an article which appeared on Profweb in March 2016 entitled Virtual Team Teaching is Gaining Ground in the Regions. This article described the Entente Canada-Québec supported cross-campus collaboration project involving CEGEPs from Jonquière, Alma and Abitibi-Témiscamingue. The project aimed to build a virtual regional team teaching network and to initiate our students to this approach through the use of multi-site collaborative activities. As promised in our previous article, we are now providing an update on the project as the semester comes to a close.

The last time I spoke with Anna Dera, Biology Teacher at CEGEP Champlain-St. Lawrence, she was thrilled to be sharing her experience about using Learning Catalytics, which you can read about in the Profweb article Exploring Student Assessment Systems: Part 1 – Learning Catalytics. At that time, she expressed her desire to try out some free platforms, as Learning Catalytics requires a student subscription fee. Anna’s research lead her to create a short list of free platforms to experiment with including Socrative, Google Forms, Spiral, and Piazza. A few students also used Quizlet on their own for studying purposes.

Meeting Students Where They’re At!

Kelly La Venture and Becki George of Northland College Wisconsin presented a workshop on hybrid instruction at the recent Canadian International Conference on Education (CICE) at Cape Breton University in Sydney, Nova Scotia from June 16-19, 2014. After their workshop, in conversation with Profweb’s Norm Spatz, they elaborated on their motivation for creating and teaching hybrid classes. Kelly’s and Becki’s remarks are testimonials that providing flexible learning approaches builds contentment among students – helping Quebec college students master ICT profile skills.

The active learning methods have in common of placing the students in the middle of the learning process. Their teachers can then also think about giving them a role in the planning of the evaluation. Active learning is inspired by real-life contexts that are meaningful for the students, which can increase their level of motivation for the tasks that are suggested to them. It encourages durable learnings rather than using only their short-term memory.
