Today’s students not only need to have access to knowledge, but must also be equipped to understand the many contexts and cultural points of view that give meaning to what they know in order to apply their knowledge effectively and sensitively. For that reason, cross-cultural competence has become a key skill in the 21st Century.

In my first story on Profweb, I talked about a serious game that I was working on called Prêt à négocier. Since that first article, I joined Affordance Studio, a serious game studio in Montreal, as a co-founder. If you haven’t heard of the term “serious game” before, they are games that have a goal other than pure entertainment. They are used in education, military, government and health care. They are starting to pop up all over the place. Here is a list of some of the more well-known serious games: Dragon Box, 3D Virtual Operating Room, and Government in Action.

This is how two teachers, Heather Sorella and Maureen Buck, from the Fashion Marketing program at College LaSalle, came to develop an E-commerce AEC. During an industry internship, Maureen recognized the growing demand for E-commerce in the fashion industry. Both teachers decided that their students needed to have E-commerce knowledge in preparation for entering the workplace. As a result, the Fashion Department Co-coordinator, Sandra Parker, decided to implement a one semester 180 hour (120 academic/ 60 internship) E-commerce Retail Specialist AEC.

The authors decided to replace the traditional student books and grammar books used in their classes with material from the Net. All in all it was a wonderful experience in creativity, but because they ended up doing both the teaching and writing, time became an issue. Whether they repeat the experience depends on the publication du jour.

Meeting Students Where They’re At!

Kelly La Venture and Becki George of Northland College Wisconsin presented a workshop on hybrid instruction at the recent Canadian International Conference on Education (CICE) at Cape Breton University in Sydney, Nova Scotia from June 16-19, 2014. After their workshop, in conversation with Profweb’s Norm Spatz, they elaborated on their motivation for creating and teaching hybrid classes. Kelly’s and Becki’s remarks are testimonials that providing flexible learning approaches builds contentment among students – helping Quebec college students master ICT profile skills.

The active learning methods have in common of placing the students in the middle of the learning process. Their teachers can then also think about giving them a role in the planning of the evaluation. Active learning is inspired by real-life contexts that are meaningful for the students, which can increase their level of motivation for the tasks that are suggested to them. It encourages durable learnings rather than using only their short-term memory.
