A Digital Laboratory Notebook Within Moodle

The laboratory notebook is indispensable within many scientific disciplines, as it constitutes the "memory of an experiment." The content is traditionally written by hand in a spiral-bound notebook. The observations,  measurements, calculations and results are recorded in a chronological and permanent fashion in the notebook. With the development of computing and the widespread use of digital tools, the laboratory notebooks are, little by little, transforming into scrapbooks.

He decided to produce a manual in the form of a book because most times his students have only one screen in a lab, and he wanted to provide something tangible for them to consult while they drafted.

I’ve been using Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) for more than 10 years now. In the beginning, the fact that I could use the software for free was what I found interesting. As time went on, I grew to appreciate their user-friendliness and their interoperability. My use of FOSS has now taken on a symbolic value: a refusal of hyper-consumerism, rejecting any restraints on the free flow of ideas caused by copyright laws and opposing the commercialisation of education.

Meeting Students Where They’re At!

Kelly La Venture and Becki George of Northland College Wisconsin presented a workshop on hybrid instruction at the recent Canadian International Conference on Education (CICE) at Cape Breton University in Sydney, Nova Scotia from June 16-19, 2014. After their workshop, in conversation with Profweb’s Norm Spatz, they elaborated on their motivation for creating and teaching hybrid classes. Kelly’s and Becki’s remarks are testimonials that providing flexible learning approaches builds contentment among students – helping Quebec college students master ICT profile skills.

The active learning methods have in common of placing the students in the middle of the learning process. Their teachers can then also think about giving them a role in the planning of the evaluation. Active learning is inspired by real-life contexts that are meaningful for the students, which can increase their level of motivation for the tasks that are suggested to them. It encourages durable learnings rather than using only their short-term memory.
