Thanks to a grant in the context of the Digital Action Plan, video is quickly becoming an integral part of the pedagogical practices of college teachers at the Séminaire de Sherbrooke. Used as part of a flipped teaching approaches or to supplement notions seen in class, videos are distributed through Microsoft Stream channels tied in with the Microsoft Teams accounts of several teachers. Here are some examples.

These days, among the living dead, there are the ones who are depending on the SmartBoard because in my classes, they know that what was put on the board will be available to them later on. There are still some students, however, who are taking notes.

The digital frontier affords many opportunities for approaching educational and institutional constraints with creative solutions. Roger Maclean at John Abbott College has started to address certain organizational challenges to teaching by using panoramic 360 degree videos to allow students to immerse themselves in a virtual environment for learning. I recently sat down with Roger, who assures me that the barriers to entry have never been fewer than now for teachers to try out 360 degree immersive video technology.

GenZers and Millenials use YouTube recreationally, but many are now using it to learn. They find it easier to understand something when they can watch a demonstration of the skill. They also like the fact that they can rewind and watch the demonstration as many times as necessary without having the feeling that they are inconveniencing anyone. Think of the trend of video-game walkthroughs where video game players film themselves playing a game and comment as they progress through the game. The new gamers learn all the tricks by watching more experienced gamers play.

Kelly La Venture and Becki George of Northland College Wisconsin presented a workshop on hybrid instruction at the recent Canadian International Conference on Education (CICE) at Cape Breton University in Sydney, Nova Scotia from June 16-19, 2014. After their workshop, in conversation with Profweb’s Norm Spatz, they elaborated on their motivation for creating and teaching hybrid classes. Kelly’s and Becki’s remarks are testimonials that providing flexible learning approaches builds contentment among students – helping Quebec college students master ICT profile skills.

The active learning methods have in common of placing the students in the middle of the learning process. Their teachers can then also think about giving them a role in the planning of the evaluation. Active learning is inspired by real-life contexts that are meaningful for the students, which can increase their level of motivation for the tasks that are suggested to them. It encourages durable learnings rather than using only their short-term memory.
