For more than a year, I have been experimenting with dual-mode teaching at Cégep Limoilou. In the fall of 2020, my CEGEP entrusted me with the responsibility of equipping my fellow teachers to help them take ownership of dual-mode teaching in order to make their courses functional from the first week of the semester. In this text, I discuss dual-mode teaching, Cégep Limoilou's journey in this format of hybrid learning and my role as a mentor.

To diversify my teaching strategies, I use online videos. These explain concepts in a smart way through images and simple demonstrations that facilitate understanding. I use these videos in a flipped classroom approach or as part of a self-directed learning approach. Although I find the content of the videos relevant, I am not always satisfied with the students’ level of engagement. I was introduced to the Edpuzzle platform, which really meets my needs. Here’s why.

For about 7 years I have been teaching Quantitative Methods in Social Science Research, a required course for Social Science Students that involves statistical analysis. With the rising cost of maintaining our software license agreement with a statistical package provider, the Methods sub-committee at our college decided to replace our prior solution with a more economical one, which required us to retool and retrain both faculty and students. We rose to the challenge and recently added a customizable on-line training video series that allows us to focus our valuable class time on teaching statistics and quantitative methodology - putting them into practice, rather than software training.

A Virtual Teaching Assistant in the Blended Classroom

A blended learning approach (sometimes referred to as hybrid teaching) seems to be the best of both worlds, combining online instruction with face-to-face classroom interaction. Many report that the blended classroom–regardless of which model is used–is flexible and convenient, as it offers access to lots of resources. Using online tools can also increase student motivation. A 2012 article in Profweb reported that the hybrid/blended classroom is growing in popularity in Québec. This is not surprising since some recent research has shown that blended classrooms can outperform traditional classrooms. I’ve been teaching academic writing to high-intermediate and advanced English as a Second Language (ESL) students at the Cégep de Saint-Laurent for the past several years. Using the Moodle platform, I’ve been doing hybrid or blended teaching in multi-skill courses at the 102 and 103 levels.

Meeting Students Where They’re At!

Kelly La Venture and Becki George of Northland College Wisconsin presented a workshop on hybrid instruction at the recent Canadian International Conference on Education (CICE) at Cape Breton University in Sydney, Nova Scotia from June 16-19, 2014. After their workshop, in conversation with Profweb’s Norm Spatz, they elaborated on their motivation for creating and teaching hybrid classes. Kelly’s and Becki’s remarks are testimonials that providing flexible learning approaches builds contentment among students – helping Quebec college students master ICT profile skills.

Active Learning

The active learning methods have in common of placing the students in the middle of the learning process. Their teachers can then also think about giving them a role in the planning of the evaluation. Active learning is inspired by real-life contexts that are meaningful for the students, which can increase their level of motivation for the tasks that are suggested to them. It encourages durable learnings rather than using only their short-term memory.
