An Open Education Resource for Physical Education

The Physical Education department at LaSalle College is small; there are 3 full-time and 4 part-time teachers. When we decided to create our own, tailor-made course materials, several members of the teaching team got on board. It has taken the shape of a digital format textbook, or eBook, which we called Moving Toward the Benefits of Physical Activity. Cindy Cook and Marc Beauchamp did the writing and content-checking, Samantha Haas edited every chapter, and Sylvain Desmarteau did the Word formatting, layout, graphic search, creation and set up of the hosting site (presently a Google site).

ICTs That Have a Positive Impact on Students with ADHD

Teachers and staff at CEGEP Champlain-St. Lawrence were invited to participate in 2 pedagogical workshops about practical tips for teaching students with ADHD, on November 24, 2016 and more recently on February 23, 2017. These workshops were presented by Isabelle Quirion, Adapted Services Counsellor for colleges in Eastern Quebec, who works for the CCSI (Centres collégiaux de soutien à l’intégration). The first workshop introduced participants to ADHD and its impacts on college students. Considering that these students are easily distracted, have trouble staying attentive, frequently forget things, and have trouble remaining seated, I could not help thinking that the use of ICTs must be a hindrance to their learning. However, after reading the literature that Isabelle distributed and attending the second workshop, I realized that when used appropriately, there are many technological tools that teachers already have access to, that can help these students stay focused, get organized and have a positive impact on their academic lives.

For many teachers, their first foray towards integrating Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) into their pedagogical practice comes through the use of digital presentation software (such as Microsoft PowerPoint) as a visual support for their lectures. Nowadays, these digital slideshows are undoubtedly the most common technology in college-level classrooms. This tool has become the norm and teachers who do not use it are becoming few and far between. Presentation software such as PowerPoint, Apple Keynote, LibreOffice Impress and Prezi all have interesting features (with the last two being freely available over the Internet). That said, they also contain shortcomings and traps that should be avoided. This in-depth report presents various uses of presentation software in class along with tips and advice for using slideshows within an educational context.

Instagram is the mobile app that allows users to share the pictures or videos they have taken. In class, Instagram offers a visual alternative to students who are often overloaded with texts. In an anatomy class for example, isn’t it easier for student students to learn about the structure of a bone from a picture rather than a long description?

Meeting Students Where They’re At!

Kelly La Venture and Becki George of Northland College Wisconsin presented a workshop on hybrid instruction at the recent Canadian International Conference on Education (CICE) at Cape Breton University in Sydney, Nova Scotia from June 16-19, 2014. After their workshop, in conversation with Profweb’s Norm Spatz, they elaborated on their motivation for creating and teaching hybrid classes. Google Classroom to Support Sustainable Learning in the Dental Prosthesis Program

I teach in the Dental Prosthesis Program. During the winter session, I give the course Conception et confection de pièces squelettiques II to students in their 4th semester in the program. This course allows them to finish acquiring the skills essential for them to succeed the integration activity. However, the students do not have the opportunity to practice these skills between their 4th and 6th semester of studies. This means that 3rd year students sometimes have difficulty finding theoretical or practical notions from the year before. For this reason, I set out to find both, a way to ensure the safekeeping of course contents and a means of making the content easily accessible to the students.

Teachers’ Use of ICTs: What Do Students Think?

In the context of a research project funded by the “Fonds de Recherche du Québec sur la société et la culture” (FRQRSC), 311 students from Dawson College and Cégep André-Laurendeau were surveyed online, in French or English, about their teachers’ practices in the use of ICTs and cyber-learning. This survey allowed the researchers to collect data on the teachers’ use of technology as well as the students’ level of satisfaction regarding this use.
