Motivating students in Quantitative Methods and History classes can be a challenge, especially when a class begins at 8 a.m. Keeping students engaged is also a challenge, with their attachment to smartphones and social media. I see this attachment as a positive opportunity to harness with my students, and to show them how they can use this technology as a tool for learning. Over the past few semesters I have addressed student motivation and engagement by integrating the use of my iPad along with their devices using a problem-based learning approach. Along the way, I discovered strategies to overcome student shyness and to help students take pride in the work they produce.

In preparing her lesson on the concept of supply and demand, she googled “supply and demand clickers” and that was more or less the beginning of her involvement with information technology.

In recent semesters, I have been using GeoGebra and Moodle to provide opportunities for my students to interact with Physics-related content and get instantaneous feedback. These tools allow me to better monitor whether they have integrated the learning objectives of my classes and track the friction points, and has ultimately helped to improve their performance in my courses.

Since I don’t like policing my class either, I integrated the use of cell phones into my class. I made them a tool for learning!

Meeting Students Where They’re At!

Kelly La Venture and Becki George of Northland College Wisconsin presented a workshop on hybrid instruction at the recent Canadian International Conference on Education (CICE) at Cape Breton University in Sydney, Nova Scotia from June 16-19, 2014. After their workshop, in conversation with Profweb’s Norm Spatz, they elaborated on their motivation for creating and teaching hybrid classes. Kelly’s and Becki’s remarks are testimonials that providing flexible learning approaches builds contentment among students – helping Quebec college students master ICT profile skills.

The active learning methods have in common of placing the students in the middle of the learning process. Their teachers can then also think about giving them a role in the planning of the evaluation. Active learning is inspired by real-life contexts that are meaningful for the students, which can increase their level of motivation for the tasks that are suggested to them. It encourages durable learnings rather than using only their short-term memory.
