Schoology: an LMS that Truly Connects You with Your Students

In the digital era, learning management systems (LMS) have become a central part of our educational practices. Whether you send an electronic message to a student, post grades online, share a homework assignment in the cloud, or set up a web-based activity, chances are you use an LMS to accomplish this. With such a variety of tasks on offer, clearly no two learning management systems are the same. Schoology is an LMS with a strong emphasis on communication and collaboration, making it particularly useful for use with non-traditional course formats (active or flipped approaches, blended learning, distance teaching, etc.).

An Inexpensive Approach to Making Video Tutorials

Short, concise video tutorials can be an effective way to explain theory or demonstrate a concept. Students can watch the video as many times as they need and the video can serve as a refresher material for students prior to evaluations. The cost to produce a video has diminished with the arrival of a number of free software tools and services that are provided for free to users. What follows is a proposition for a short workflow to create video tutorials using open source software and free services.

Friday September 30, 2016, I had the opportunity to attend a physics course based on Problem-Based Learning (PBL) in a multifunctional classroom. I was also able to speak with Stéphan Gaumont-Guay, a teacher at Cégep Limoilou who has been using this approach since 2004. Our meeting place was in a 21st century classroom at the Charlesbourg Campus.

Video Tutorials for Teachers for the Inclusive Use of Smartphones

Teachers are sometimes reluctant to use smartphones as a tool for teaching and learning since they can be viewed as a source of distraction in the classroom. The Adaptech Research Network, which performs research on accessible technologies, spearheaded an Entente-Canada-Québec (ECQ) project to share approaches to integrating these omnipresent devices into teaching and learning. In September 2020, Profweb spoke to Anick Legault, a Psychology teacher and Adaptech Research Network Research Associate at Dawson who developed a series of video tutorials within the ECQ project designed to inspire teachers to use smartphones as part of their teaching practice.

In April of 2019, the VTÉ (Vitrine technologie-éducation) organized a laboratory entitled Innovative Pedagogy: Play, Gamification and Serious Games in Service of Seriously Motivating Lessons! (La pédagogie innovante: le jeu, la ludification et les jeux sérieux au service d’apprentissages sérieusement motivants!) During the laboratory, there was definitely an emphasis on technological tools, but I will be focusing here on a "low-tech" way of gamifying in a domain which is, without question, very technological: computer science. See how Stéphane Lévesque, a teacher in software engineering, uses LEGO to initiate his students to the Agile methodology (a project management methodology for teams which is prevalent in business).

3D-print Technology for Smartphone-based Physics Experiments

I’m not that great at building things, which, I guess, is why I ended up being a physicist and not an engineer. As previously reported on Profweb, I have been running accelerometer experiments with smartphones to help my students learn physics concepts through digital-era equivalents of “real world” examples. With the help of students, we developed 3D-printed equipment to make these experiments more accessible to our growing network of teachers outside of our college.

The Quebec college network is a dynamic place where stakeholders often work across institutional borders to advance higher education in the province. For me, there are few people that embody the network’s culture of sharing and collaboration more than Rafael Scapin, the mild-mannered intellectual educational technologist with a soft Brazilian accent from Dawson College. His vast knowledge of techno-pedagogical approaches and more specifically, his guru status with the Moodle learning management platform have made him somewhat of a celebrity in the college network! But there’s much more to him than meets the eye!

Meeting Students Where They’re At!

Kelly La Venture and Becki George of Northland College Wisconsin presented a workshop on hybrid instruction at the recent Canadian International Conference on Education (CICE) at Cape Breton University in Sydney, Nova Scotia from June 16-19, 2014. After their workshop, in conversation with Profweb’s Norm Spatz, they elaborated on their motivation for creating and teaching hybrid classes. Kelly’s and Becki’s remarks are testimonials that providing flexible learning approaches builds contentment among students – helping Quebec college students master ICT profile skills.

The active learning methods have in common of placing the students in the middle of the learning process. Their teachers can then also think about giving them a role in the planning of the evaluation. Active learning is inspired by real-life contexts that are meaningful for the students, which can increase their level of motivation for the tasks that are suggested to them. It encourages durable learnings rather than using only their short-term memory.
