Keeping students focused and motivated is a constant challenge for teachers, especially in classes where a lot of the material has to be learnt by heart. An effective way to address that issue is to turn review sessions into games: the informal context allows students to relax and the friendly competition keeps them motivated. The web-based application, Factile, which I have used in my English for Adventure Tourism class, allows you to turn your classroom into the set of Jeopardy and make your review sessions efficient and entertaining.

Facing the dilemma of how to respect course criteria which stipulated vocabulary and texts that target students' individual programs and career choices when each class had students from many programs, I turned to tools like Moodle. I've made the surprising discovery that Moodle makes it easier for me to spend more time on pedagogy. In spite of the limited number of times we see them in class and their busy lives outside of the classroom, I am reaching out to students through IT!

Generating Content for the Flipped Classroom Using Panopto Software

Last year Casey Burkholder worked for the Center for Engineering in Society. In an interview with her, she mentioned that Deborah Dysart-Gale, Chair and Associate Professor of the Center, promoted a hybrid course design for graduate level engineering students in a writing course on technical writing for computer scientists and engineers. Burkholder taught one section of this technical writing course where students completed most of their work outside of class and brought their results to class for revision. In effect, she ran the course like a writing workshop, creating lecture materials and videos before class and then posting them online. Students would watch them and be guided to a prompt where they would create a first draft of a writing piece. Class time was spent working in small groups and with one-on-one instructor / student time to focus on students’ actual writing. This approach was enabled through the use of Panopto Software.

During the development of the English in Business course at Vieux Montreal, there weren't enough students in the program to create more than one group whose students' language skills varied from beginner to bilingual. Norm Spatz felt that this situation could improve using information technology. Two or more teachers at different schools could divide their combined virtual class into two or more groups according to language levels.

Using Google Docs to Teach Essay Writing and Create an Environment for Peer Learning

The collaboration possibilities provided by Google Docs have allowed me to take teaching essay writing to both a higher and more effective level. Students advance through the notions of essay writing, working continuously on improving the same document throughout the semester, to finish with a polished essay. Peer learning with Google Docs creates an atmosphere of collaboration and makes it easier for me and the students to see the progress being made as well as the competencies being acquired.

Mixing Business with Pleasure: Using Socrative on Smartphones in Class!

Most students have smartphones. I didn’t used to enjoy them fooling around with these gadgets in class, whether they were browsing through their social media updates or texting. Since I don’t like policing my class either, I integrated the use of cell phones into my class. I made them a tool for learning!

Virtual Team Teaching is Gaining Ground in the Regions

The Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean region of Quebec is a bastion of the French language where students have few authentic opportunities to engage in English conversation with Anglophones or English-speaking Allophones. This can be particularly problematic for English as a Second Language teachers. Thanks to a grant from the Entente Canada-Québec and the assistance of Vanier College, our project was able to find an innovative solution that provided students with the next best thing to an authentic English environment.
