Improving the quantity or frequency of feedback, as well as its timeliness, quality and detail, benefits students while reducing the time and tedium involved in correcting large numbers of assignments for teachers of ESL.

Generating Content for the Flipped Classroom Using Panopto Software

Last year Casey Burkholder worked for the Center for Engineering in Society. In an interview with her, she mentioned that Deborah Dysart-Gale, Chair and Associate Professor of the Center, promoted a hybrid course design for graduate level engineering students in a writing course on technical writing for computer scientists and engineers. Burkholder taught one section of this technical writing course where students completed most of their work outside of class and brought their results to class for revision. In effect, she ran the course like a writing workshop, creating lecture materials and videos before class and then posting them online. Students would watch them and be guided to a prompt where they would create a first draft of a writing piece. Class time was spent working in small groups and with one-on-one instructor / student time to focus on students’ actual writing. This approach was enabled through the use of Panopto Software.

Migrating from WebCT to Moodle with Regular Expressions

Mel Shantz, along with his colleagues at Ahuntsic over the years, has put many hours of preparation time into the creation of web-based quizzes. With the college's decision to change its course management system (CMS) from WebCT to Moodle, those hours of preparation time were in danger of being lost unless an efficient method of migrating the quizzes to the new CMS was found. Short of typing out each of the quiz questions, proofreading them, and re-piloting the quizzes on the new platform, Mel has been attempting to export his quizzes from WebCT and import them into Moodle using the quiz tool's import filter.

Although the first iteration of a hybrid course allowing more level- specific learning among students taking a discipline-specific second language course in administration was disrupted by last year's student activism, this year's course has provided a fertile field for experimenting with the concept of virtual cohorts. Using Google Docs to Teach Essay Writing and Create an Environment for Peer Learning

The collaboration possibilities provided by Google Docs have allowed me to take teaching essay writing to both a higher and more effective level. Students advance through the notions of essay writing, working continuously on improving the same document throughout the semester, to finish with a polished essay. Peer learning with Google Docs creates an atmosphere of collaboration and makes it easier for me and the students to see the progress being made as well as the competencies being acquired.

Mixing Business with Pleasure: Using Socrative on Smartphones in Class!

Most students have smartphones. I didn’t used to enjoy them fooling around with these gadgets in class, whether they were browsing through their social media updates or texting. Since I don’t like policing my class either, I integrated the use of cell phones into my class. I made them a tool for learning!

Virtual Team Teaching is Gaining Ground in the Regions

The Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean region of Quebec is a bastion of the French language where students have few authentic opportunities to engage in English conversation with Anglophones or English-speaking Allophones. This can be particularly problematic for English as a Second Language teachers. Thanks to a grant from the Entente Canada-Québec and the assistance of Vanier College, our project was able to find an innovative solution that provided students with the next best thing to an authentic English environment.
