Following a presentation at the 2018 SALTISE Conference, I was happy to interview 2 French as a second language teachers who are committed to learning more about what motivates students. Sarah Anthony and Prisca Fenoglio have developed pedagogical scenarios with Web 2.0 tools to encourage motivation by inciting emotions conducive to learning, by developing creative and collaborative skills and by learning outside of the classroom. Their collaboration started in 2015 and resulted in the creation of the INNO-MOTI-VATION website.

Use of Interactive Tools in a French as a Second Language Blended Course Using Videoconferencing

Chantale gave a blended French as a second language course using the VIA platform for a synchronous online lesson every second meeting. Both she and her students found the platform user-friendly, and unexpectedly, Chantale felt that she knew more about her students at the end of the online course than at the end of a face-to-face course.

The Francomane website is filled with useful resources for French as a second language teachers as well as the tutors of the French help centres that help the students of those classes. Francomane was created by Sanaa Rizk Bastien, teacher at Vanier College, and Lyane Henrichon, teacher at Dawson College, and produced by the CCDMD (Collegial Centre for Educational Materials Development).

Two Dawson French teachers (Chantale Giguère and Laurent Duval) have developed a new online course called A Tutorial for the OQLF French Exam - Health Sector Students and Professionals. This 45-hour fully online course specifically designed for health sector is now offered by Dawson’s Center of Training and Development (CTD). The students are pharmacists, nurses, doctors, x-ray technicians or students in the health sector who want to improve their French competencies to work in the Quebec health system.

I'm a French Second Language teacher at John Abbott College. We've been using Tell Me More for about three years now.Tell Me More is a commercial Internet site for language instruction designed in Europe which is very popular in American universities and has a quite impressive repertory of communicative activities, grammar exercises, pronunciation exercises, etc. The teachers choose which exercises to send to students, and Tell Me More sends back a detailed report on what the student has and hasn't done.

Polycom for Polyglots in Saint Petersburg

An ongoing exchange project between French as a Second Language students at Vanier College and students of French in Saint Petersburg, Russia began last year. Amazingly, the technology was no problem! Vanier’s boardroom has a hardware installation using Polycom software which was also being used by the school in Russia. Stéphane literally walked into the boardroom where there’s a camera hard-wired, pushed a button and had perfect communication with his partner in Russia's second city.
