Stepping Towards Inclusive Pedagogy with Screen Reader-Friendly Course Material

Inclusive pedagogy is a growing approach throughout the CEGEP network. Many teachers are seeking ways to adapt their teaching strategies to be more inclusive. On February 20, 2017, I attended an APOP webinar entitled: Développer des pratiques pédagogiques inclusives (Developing Inclusive Pedagogical Practices). Among the tools and strategies discussed, one in particular struck me, which was the benefits of using of text-to-speech, or screen readers, for a variety of learning disabilities (dyslexia, concussions, ADHD, etc.). I wondered about what would make documents easily “read” by screen readers and what teachers could do to ensure their course material is accessible. It turns out that it is not complicated to make documents fit the criteria of accessibility.

In November of 2015, Maxime Ross, a Techno-pedagogical Advisor at the Cégep de Rimouski, published an In-depth report on Profweb entitled Le projet Chromebook et le déploiement des outils Google pour l’Éducation. In this report, he presented the main steps that led to the introduction of Google Classroom and Chromebook laptops to a cohort of students in the Arts and Sciences program (AS). This first experiment aimed to explore Google's cloud-based tools, to verify their pedagogical use and to justify their deployment to the entire Cégep de Rimouski college community. So where are things now, a year later?

Creating an Inclusive Online Learning Environment with Office 365 Teams and the OneNote Class Notebook

The Office 365 OneNote Class Notebook is my favorite online tool for distributing course content as it greatly facilitates note taking and includes the Immersive Reader, which is a great tool for eliminating difficulties related to screen-based reading. By integrating my class notebook into the Office 365 Teams application, I have developed a very comprehensive collaborative and structured learning environment allowing all tasks to be completed in one place.

Digital Slideshows in Class

For many teachers, their first foray towards integrating Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) into their pedagogical practice comes through the use of digital presentation software (such as Microsoft PowerPoint) as a visual support for their lectures. Nowadays, these digital slideshows are undoubtedly the most common technology in college-level classrooms. This tool has become the norm and teachers who do not use it are becoming few and far between. Presentation software such as PowerPoint, Apple Keynote, LibreOffice Impress and Prezi all have interesting features (with the last two being freely available over the Internet). That said, they also contain shortcomings and traps that should be avoided. This in-depth report presents various uses of presentation software in class along with tips and advice for using slideshows within an educational context.

To support teachers in their use of the iPad, APOP responded to a call from Cégep de Rivière-du-Loup to create a partnership to produce an online tool in French called Éducapplis, which allowed users to collect and share not only lists but also pedagogical experiences with computer tablets. The online apps repository, Educapps, will be made available to the Anglophone college network during this coming Fall.

Meeting Students Where They’re At!

Kelly La Venture and Becki George of Northland College Wisconsin presented a workshop on hybrid instruction at the recent Canadian International Conference on Education (CICE) at Cape Breton University in Sydney, Nova Scotia from June 16-19, 2014. After their workshop, in conversation with Profweb’s Norm Spatz, they elaborated on their motivation for creating and teaching hybrid classes. The active learning methods have in common of placing the students in the middle of the learning process. Their teachers can then also think about giving them a role in the planning of the evaluation. Active learning is inspired by real-life contexts that are meaningful for the students, which can increase their level of motivation for the tasks that are suggested to them. It encourages durable learnings rather than using only their short-term memory.
