In my first story on Profweb, I talked about a serious game that I was working on called Prêt à négocier. Since that first article, I joined Affordance Studio, a serious game studio in Montreal, as a co-founder. If you haven’t heard of the term “serious game” before, they are games that have a goal other than pure entertainment. They are used in education, military, government and health care. They are starting to pop up all over the place. Here is a list of some of the more well-known serious games: Dragon Box, 3D Virtual Operating Room, and Government in Action.

H5P: A Tool for Gamifying Learning

In April of 2019, the VTÉ (Vitrine technologie-éducation) organized a laboratory entitled Innovative Pedagogy: Play, Gamification and Serious Games in Service of Seriously Motivating Lessons! (La pédagogie innovante: le jeu, la ludification et les jeux sérieux au service d’apprentissages sérieusement motivants!) During the laboratory, all kinds of ways to gamify learning were discussed, including the use of a web-based tool named H5P that integrates well with Moodle. H5P allows you to create a remarkable variety of attractive and fun interactive exercises. This on-line tool has proven its worth, notably amongst the “francization” teachers at Collège de Bois-de-Boulogne.

I like to stay abreast of new technologies, and gamification is an aspect I have wanted to integrate into my English Second Language classes for some time now. I am not a gamer but I have lived with gamers so I am very familiar with the allure of the very popular Massive Multi Online Role Play Games. (MMROPG’s). Like many teachers I dream of seeing my students as attracted to, interested in, and excited about their ESL class content as I am. Unfortunately, most games I came across and could integrate into my planning fell short of my needs or were difficult to adapt to the ESL classroom. Then I discovered Classcraft!

Meeting Students Where They’re At!

Kelly La Venture and Becki George of Northland College Wisconsin presented a workshop on hybrid instruction at the recent Canadian International Conference on Education (CICE) at Cape Breton University in Sydney, Nova Scotia from June 16-19, 2014. After their workshop, in conversation with Profweb’s Norm Spatz, they elaborated on their motivation for creating and teaching hybrid classes. The active learning methods have in common of placing the students in the middle of the learning process. Their teachers can then also think about giving them a role in the planning of the evaluation. Active learning is inspired by real-life contexts that are meaningful for the students, which can increase their level of motivation for the tasks that are suggested to them.
