I have changed my way of teaching in order to improve the students’ engagement in the class when I give the Ethics and Politics course. This has led me to discover the potential of the Moodle platform, which allows me to dive deeper into the content that I teach and to vary the teaching and evaluating methods I use in class.

Commitment to Active Learning Results in a Significant Grant for LaSalle College

The installation of Active Learning (AL) spaces in Quebec Colleges is an important part of the movement to help college teachers transform their pedagogy and to promote deeper learning for students. Profweb was recently invited to LaSalle College to visit their new Steelcase Active Learning room and to speak with teachers that are using an AL approach. LaSalle College is the only Canadian institution to have won a grant from Steelcase Education in 2016, which allowed the college to renovate one of their classrooms and acquire modular furniture and technology.

Teaching Terminology with Tools That Engage Students

The foundation of many courses relies on students learning new vocabulary: geography, biology, marketing, tourism, economics, physiotherapy, and the list goes on. For many disciplines, these important words must be mastered before a teacher can dive into the course subject matter. Finding ways to help students learn terminology through context and meaning, while making it fun and interesting, is a challenge. Teaching English for Tourism and other courses in the Bilingual Tourism Program (CEGEPs Limoilou and Champlain-St. Lawrence) has given me the opportunity to try different approaches and test various tools.

Meeting Students Where They’re At!

Kelly La Venture and Becki George of Northland College Wisconsin presented a workshop on hybrid instruction at the recent Canadian International Conference on Education (CICE) at Cape Breton University in Sydney, Nova Scotia from June 16-19, 2014. After their workshop, in conversation with Profweb’s Norm Spatz, they elaborated on their motivation for creating and teaching hybrid classes. Kelly’s and Becki’s remarks are testimonials that providing flexible learning approaches builds contentment among students – helping Quebec college students master ICT profile skills.

The active learning methods have in common of placing the students in the middle of the learning process. Their teachers can then also think about giving them a role in the planning of the evaluation. Active learning is inspired by real-life contexts that are meaningful for the students, which can increase their level of motivation for the tasks that are suggested to them. It encourages durable learnings rather than using only their short-term memory.
