Using CCDMD Textbooks to Best Advantage

Since 2012, all textbooks published by the Collegial Centre for Educational Materials Development (CCDMD) also appear in an innovative digital format in which the CCDMD allows teachers to use the non-text content of its textbooks such as copyright-free images, diagrams and charts free of charge. These materials are available in albums within the World of Images website.

Jack Frost is not being gentle on the fine people of Quebec at this time of year. He’s making us a bit nostalgic for the summer. Fortunately, the team at the Association québécoise de pédagogie collégiale (AQPC)informed us last week that they have completed the translation of the summer edition of their journal Pédagogie collégiale. This time, the articles revolve around the theme of access to higher education. The diversity of topics, as well as their amazing depth illustrate that the editorial staff of the journal had a very busy summer.

The Adaptech Research Network consists of a team of academics, students and stakeholders. Since 1996, we have been conducting bilingual research on postsecondary students with and without disabilities by examining factors which contribute to academic success. For example, in a six-year archival study, the key facilitator for 192 college graduates with disabilities was being registered for campus disability related services. When 633 college students with various disabilities were compared to 40,262 students without disabilities, we found that the 2 groups graduated at the same rate, although students with disabilities took a little longer.

Meeting Students Where They’re At!

Kelly La Venture and Becki George of Northland College Wisconsin presented a workshop on hybrid instruction at the recent Canadian International Conference on Education (CICE) at Cape Breton University in Sydney, Nova Scotia from June 16-19, 2014. After their workshop, in conversation with Profweb’s Norm Spatz, they elaborated on their motivation for creating and teaching hybrid classes. Kelly’s and Becki’s remarks are testimonials that providing flexible learning approaches builds contentment among students – helping Quebec college students master ICT profile skills.

The active learning methods have in common of placing the students in the middle of the learning process. Their teachers can then also think about giving them a role in the planning of the evaluation. Active learning is inspired by real-life contexts that are meaningful for the students, which can increase their level of motivation for the tasks that are suggested to them.
