At Centennial we are moving toward Universal Design in Learning (UDL) and that framework is becoming more and more prominent in our pedagogical activities. The premise of UDL is that is that we give students as much accessibility to the course content and the school structure as possible. Creating maximum accessibility clearly involves the integration of certain technological tools that we have not been using or that we were maybe reluctant in the past to try, but that push toward UDL or Universal Design really has become the driving force for change.

Kelly La Venture and Becki George of Northland College Wisconsin presented a workshop on hybrid instruction at the recent Canadian International Conference on Education (CICE) at Cape Breton University in Sydney, Nova Scotia from June 16-19, 2014. After their workshop, in conversation with Profweb’s Norm Spatz, they elaborated on their motivation for creating and teaching hybrid classes. Kelly’s and Becki’s remarks are testimonials that providing flexible learning approaches builds contentment among students – helping Quebec college students master ICT profile skills.

Create Gamified Interactive Reviews with Wordwall

Interactive quiz platforms like Kahoot and Wooclap are popular tools to liven up review sessions. They bring a game-like element to any review lesson, which motivates students and fosters retention. However, the novelty effect of such audience response systems tends to wear off rapidly. Wordwall represents a worthwhile complementary offering, as the platform contains a wide selection of mini-games that can be used to review theory, concepts and vocabulary items.

In the past, the Vitrine Technologie-Éducation has taken an interest in the potential of the Maker movement (Fab Labs) in the CEGEPs. Two projects, one at Collège Bois-de-Boulogne and the other at Champlain Saint-Lambert, were initiated to begin experimenting. Today, two more areas of ‘making’ are garnering more and more interest, namely robotics and programming (the latter brings the former to life). I would argue that both fields can be considered pretexts for developing our reflexes to collaborate and share expertise more with each other.

The active learning methods have in common of placing the students in the middle of the learning process. Their teachers can then also think about giving them a role in the planning of the evaluation. Active learning is inspired by real-life contexts that are meaningful for the students, which can increase their level of motivation for the tasks that are suggested to them. It encourages durable learnings rather than using only their short-term memory.
