Out of personal interest, I'm always on the lookout for new technopedagogical tools. To make my research easier in this constantly evolving field, I subscribe to several news feeds. This is how I discovered, a while ago, the keyword “audience response system,” associated with a tool that had captured my interest. Using this keyword in the search engine of my browser, I discovered several applications offering variations on the functionality of Mentimeter, Slido and Pear Deck, tools that I had already tried. It's Wooclap, which is designed specifically for higher education and offers a French-language interface, that caught my attention.

Spice Up Your PowerPoints With 2 New Apps

PowerPoint is one of those ubiquitous software programs few tend to laud. We’ve all sat through at least one tedious presentation commonly referred to as “death by PowerPoint.” Yet because of its relative user-friendliness, many teachers still rely on it as part of a lecture or to share content with students. Rather than introducing alternatives to the slideshow format, this article presents 2 applications that work hand-in-hand with PowerPoint to make it a more effective, dynamic and inclusive experience: SlideLizard and Hypersay (which also works with Google Slides).

Action Research in Action

Before beginning, let us start at the end. By mid-December 2017, more than 140 students attending 3 colleges had completed 45 action research projects, and in doing so had made a positive contribution to their communities, all the while sharing their experiences with each other, from planning to implementation, using an online platform. All the projects were made possible through the funding provided by ECQ (Entente-Canada Québec).

Meeting Students Where They’re At!

Kelly La Venture and Becki George of Northland College Wisconsin presented a workshop on hybrid instruction at the recent Canadian International Conference on Education (CICE) at Cape Breton University in Sydney, Nova Scotia from June 16-19, 2014. After their workshop, in conversation with Profweb’s Norm Spatz, they elaborated on their motivation for creating and teaching hybrid classes. Kelly’s and Becki’s remarks are testimonials that providing flexible learning approaches builds contentment among students – helping Quebec college students master ICT profile skills.

The active learning methods have in common of placing the students in the middle of the learning process. Their teachers can then also think about giving them a role in the planning of the evaluation. Active learning is inspired by real-life contexts that are meaningful for the students, which can increase their level of motivation for the tasks that are suggested to them. It encourages durable learnings rather than using only their short-term memory.
