New Quiz Feature in Google Forms

I have been an avid user of Google Forms for several years and I was pleasantly surprised to find a new feature added to the app. Google Forms has become one of the favorite tools I use for many of my courses. I not only use it for quizzes and surveys, but also for team project registration and topic selection, receiving internship information from students, and receiving online assignments, to name a few. Although I have tried other applications, I keep coming back to Google Forms for the ease with which other software and applications integrate into it and because it is free for my students, my college and myself.

Angela Mastracci is as passionate about formative assessment as she is expert at it. Angela first started pondering its importance when she was a fashion design teacher at Cégep Marie-Victorin. In 2008, she became an education consultant at the same college. Even though she retired from this position in 2017, Angela is still very much active professionally, teaching PERFORMA courses and leading AQPC workshops on the topic. Flipgrid: A Video-Based Discussion Forum

Flipgrid is a free Microsoft-owned platform that allows teachers to create “grids” to facilitate video discussions. As on a regular electronic discussion forum, teachers can add questions or discussion prompts (called topics). Students can then post their video responses, which are organized in a tiled grid structure, and consult their peers’ responses. Each grid can hold an unlimited number of topics and each topic can hold an unlimited number of responses, giving teachers great flexibility on how to use the tool.

I’ve been teaching in the Industrial Electronics Technology program for 23 years at the Cégep de Lévis-Lauzon. Robotics have interested me for a long time and I have updated my knowledge of them through private study over the years. When the 2 exit profiles for Industrial Electronics were combined (Electrodynamics, Instrumentation and Automation), each CEGEP offering the program created its own course grid based on the 19 ministerial competencies. It’s within this context that the department introduced the Positioning and Robotics course (Positionnement et robotique) in 2008. Then, in 2014, an Attestation of Collegial Studies in Industrial Robotics was born at Cégep de Lévis-Lauzon, after we combined our efforts with those of the Cégep de Victoriaville.

Interactive quiz platforms like Kahoot and Wooclap are popular tools to liven up review sessions. They bring a game-like element to any review lesson, which motivates students and fosters retention. However, the novelty effect of such audience response systems tends to wear off rapidly. Wordwall represents a worthwhile complementary offering, as the platform contains a wide selection of mini-games that can be used to review theory, concepts and vocabulary items.

Meeting Students Where They’re At!

Kelly La Venture and Becki George of Northland College Wisconsin presented a workshop on hybrid instruction at the recent Canadian International Conference on Education (CICE) at Cape Breton University in Sydney, Nova Scotia from June 16-19, 2014. After their workshop, in conversation with Profweb’s Norm Spatz, they elaborated on their motivation for creating and teaching hybrid classes.
