Zotero – A New Paradigm for Citation

Five years ago, when Denis saw that Zotero was free and developed by a university, he realized that it was not like a lot of software that comes from a start-up company where you don’t know whether it’s going to be there in two years or whether they have a bare bones free version, and then you have to pay for full service. He also thought that the way that it was designed as a plugin in Firefox was the way to go! It’s really easy. With just one or two clicks, you get your references in. And you have a choice of referencing styles, as well as an integration with Word! He started to use it to collect some of his references in his courses. And then at a Social Sciences Department meeting one day, he talked about it and realized that our students should all begin to use it!

We are pleased to announce that we have put together our new Editorial Committee, whose first meeting will be taking place this Wednesday, February the 11th. Under the Coordinator’s authority, the Editorial Committee’s mandate is to submit briefs and provide suggestions with regards to Profweb’s editorial orientations, its format and the content of the site (Real Life Stories, Reports and Representation) as well as to discuss the diverse subjects that affect the evolution of Profweb.

The fall is upon us and many IT-REPs and REPTICs in the college network are back in the swing of things, supporting individual teachers who are trying new approaches and technologies in their classrooms. Many have also begun preparing for upcoming ped days - thinking about how to provide professional development (PD) opportunities for faculty that will have a positive impact on their respective college. I recently had the opportunity to meet with Avi Spector from Quebec’s RÉCIT network and asked him about his approach to working with teachers. The approach he is currently using can be an inspiration for us all.

Nicole Perreault  gives a preview of the 2010-2011 agenda of the IT Representatives' Network which she moderates. The goal of these activities is to facilitate the integration of IT into education for both teachers and students. Projects include the IT Skills Profile for students, InukTIC, SavoirFaireTIC and an evaluation grid for pedagogical IT activities. Teachers are encouraged to provide feedback on these projects as well as their own future plans.

Meeting Students Where They’re At!

Kelly La Venture and Becki George of Northland College Wisconsin presented a workshop on hybrid instruction at the recent Canadian International Conference on Education (CICE) at Cape Breton University in Sydney, Nova Scotia from June 16-19, 2014. After their workshop, in conversation with Profweb’s Norm Spatz, they elaborated on their motivation for creating and teaching hybrid classes. Kelly’s and Becki’s remarks are testimonials that providing flexible learning approaches builds contentment among students – helping Quebec college students master ICT profile skills.

The active learning methods have in common of placing the students in the middle of the learning process. Their teachers can then also think about giving them a role in the planning of the evaluation. Active learning is inspired by real-life contexts that are meaningful for the students, which can increase their level of motivation for the tasks that are suggested to them. It encourages durable learnings rather than using only their short-term memory.
