How ICTs Are Changing the College Library and Expanding Our Classrooms

The school library was something that I had not given too much thought to prior to reading an inspiring article entitled How This School Library Increased Students Use by 1,000 Percent. It’s about a high school in the United States that transformed their library into an open concept collaboration centre. The teacher in me saw this concept as both exciting and inspirational. How great would it be to have a room full of ICT equipment and tools that my students could use in a collaborative way? A library that was busy and noisy, with groups of students working, talking, creating and learning together. Where there was an “ICT librarian” to help them when they had questions or problems with a tool.

Researching Best Presentation Practices and Sharing of PowerPoints

Presentation software is a ubiquitous part of lecturing in the college network. When shared with students, the presentation slides can be a very useful tool for students, and particularly for those who have special needs. The Adaptech Research Network recently conducted a series of focus groups on presentation approaches and sharing of slides that involved students, teachers and professional staff. The team invited Profweb to a meeting at the end of the Fall 2017 semester to share their initial findings.

In 2014, the Vitrine technologie-éducation presented a virtual laboratory on the topic, before organizing exploratory activities for college IT-reps in 2016 and 2017. To diversify my teaching strategies, I use online videos. These explain concepts in a smart way through images and simple demonstrations that facilitate understanding. I use these videos in a flipped classroom approach or as part of a self-directed learning approach. Although I find the content of the videos relevant, I am not always satisfied with the students’ level of engagement. I was introduced to the Edpuzzle platform, which really meets my needs. When presenting my course during the first class of the semester, I used to tell my students I would rigorously respect the start and end times of our classes while scheduling breaks in a more flexible manner depending on that week’s content and activities. I’d never questioned this practice until I was stuck in a rather tedious meeting without knowing how long it would go on for. Time seemed to take on another dimension in the absence of precise markers. Realizing my students might feel the same way, I decided to look for a more effective method to organize and manage time in my classes. I found this in the Pomodoro technique.

Meeting Students Where They’re At!

Kelly La Venture and Becki George of Northland College Wisconsin presented a workshop on hybrid instruction at the recent Canadian International Conference on Education (CICE) at Cape Breton University in Sydney, Nova Scotia from June 16-19, 2014. After their workshop, in conversation with Profweb’s Norm Spatz, they elaborated on their motivation for creating and teaching hybrid classes.
