The term active learning classroom usually evokes images of a sleek space packed with all of the latest technological bells and whistles. Not so at Cégep de Sept-Îles. To fit our teaching and learning needs and goals, we consciously opted for a classroom where inter-activity – not technology – plays a central role. This being 2017, of course it doesn’t mean we relegated electronic devices altogether. Here’s the story that explains the “how” and “why” of our low-tech active learning classroom.

Silvia d'Apollonia decided to place herself and her students in an environment in which lecturing would be difficult (a computer lab) and used a form of problem-based learning (PBL). Basically, she created 5-member teams of students and after briefly introducing the topic for the day, challenged the students to collaborate on completing a set of activities on the topic using information technology.

Engaging Students in an Active Learning Classroom with the iPad and Apple TV

Motivating students in Quantitative Methods and History classes can be a challenge, especially when a class begins at 8 a.m. Keeping students engaged is also a challenge, with their attachment to smartphones and social media. I see this attachment as a positive opportunity to harness with my students, and to show them how they can use this technology as a tool for learning. Over the past few semesters I have addressed student motivation and engagement by integrating the use of my iPad along with their devices using a problem-based learning approach. Along the way, I discovered strategies to overcome student shyness and to help students take pride in the work they produce.

H5P: A Tool for Gamifying Learning

In April of 2019, the VTÉ (Vitrine technologie-éducation) organized a laboratory entitled Innovative Pedagogy: Play, Gamification and Serious Games in Service of Seriously Motivating Lessons! (La pédagogie innovante: le jeu, la ludification et les jeux sérieux au service d’apprentissages sérieusement motivants!) During the laboratory, all kinds of ways to gamify learning were discussed, including the use of a web-based tool named H5P that integrates well with Moodle. H5P allows you to create a remarkable variety of attractive and fun interactive exercises. This on-line tool has proven its worth, notably amongst the “francization” teachers at Collège de Bois-de-Boulogne.

Meeting Students Where They’re At!

Kelly La Venture and Becki George of Northland College Wisconsin presented a workshop on hybrid instruction at the recent Canadian International Conference on Education (CICE) at Cape Breton University in Sydney, Nova Scotia from June 16-19, 2014. After their workshop, in conversation with Profweb’s Norm Spatz, they elaborated on their motivation for creating and teaching hybrid classes. Kelly’s and Becki’s remarks are testimonials that providing flexible learning approaches builds contentment among students – helping Quebec college students master ICT profile skills.

The active learning methods have in common of placing the students in the middle of the learning process. Their teachers can then also think about giving them a role in the planning of the evaluation. Active learning is inspired by real-life contexts that are meaningful for the students, which can increase their level of motivation for the tasks that are suggested to them. It encourages durable learnings rather than using only their short-term memory.
