Our Heritage: AQPC’s 37th Annual Symposium

The year 2017 marks the 50th anniversary of the creation of the CEGEPs. Even if the AQPC Symposium is highlighting this anniversary by taking a look at the accomplishments of the network, it is primarily focused on the present and the future - promoting recent innovations, current approaches that are being tested and examining the results of research that is being conducted within the colleges. In this way, Symposium attendees can explore the heritage that is being built day after day in the college network, and be inspired by it in order to enrich their own educational practice.

OneNote: Office 365’s Virtual Notebook

Having had access to the Office 365 suite of applications for a few years now, I have slowly been exploring the potential uses of these tools. This semester I found myself searching for a way to organize and centralize information for the various projects and committees and I am involved in. A colleague at Champlain-St. Lawrence presented OneNote in a pedagogical activity in early March 2017, so I decided to give it a try. It is beginning to replace the paper notebook I usually carry with me to meetings, committee work, and interviews, giving me a virtual place to store and organize notes from daily life.

The CCDMD (Collegial Centre for Educational Materials Development) hosts the annual World of Images Intercollegiate Photo Contestfor students. This year marked the 6th edition of the contest, which is open to all students in the CEGEP network. The finalists of the contest had their photographs put on display at Collège de Maisonneuve from May 1 to May 5, 2017, and on May 3rd, the award ceremony and official opening of the exhibition took place.

As teachers, we are often looking for new ways to diversify and enhance our teaching strategies. In the fall 2016 semester, I was introduced to Kahoot during a library information session with my Introduction to College English students, given by Nathalie Faure, the Library Technician at our college. The level of excitement and enthusiasm was such that it prompted me to try Kahoot with my first and second year students. I can attest that Kahoot is not only fun, easy to use and engages students, but it is also a tool that can be adapted to different levels and course content.

Microsoft Announces Stream - A Hosting Option for Your Pedagogical Videos

In June 2017, Microsoft announced the general availability of a video hosting service called Stream in its Office 365 ecosystem. Given that a number of teachers, staff and students in the Quebec college network have subscriptions to this ecosystem, new possibilities are available for teaching and learning.

Meeting Students Where They’re At!

Kelly La Venture and Becki George of Northland College Wisconsin presented a workshop on hybrid instruction at the recent Canadian International Conference on Education (CICE) at Cape Breton University in Sydney, Nova Scotia from June 16-19, 2014. After their workshop, in conversation with Profweb’s Norm Spatz, they elaborated on their motivation for creating and teaching hybrid classes. Kelly’s and Becki’s remarks are testimonials that providing flexible learning approaches builds contentment among students – helping Quebec college students master ICT profile skills.

The active learning methods have in common of placing the students in the middle of the learning process. Their teachers can then also think about giving them a role in the planning of the evaluation.
