A handful of them have become something more to me than just people I see in the course of my work. Among these I include Brenda Lamb, the ICT Education Advisor at John Abbott College who has had an enduring impact on both my professional perceptions and my approach to services for the English community in Quebec.

Back in ’99, the ink wasn’t even dry on my diploma from McGill when I was tasked with managing a project to implement a Learning Management System and oversee the creation of the very first e-learning modules for a CEGEP in the Montreal area. I had heard about this free system called WebCT made by a Prof and a few students at the University of British Columbia, and I had been tinkering with Linux for a couple of years by that point. Armed with a small grant from Industry Canada and almost total freedom to get the job done, I began assembling a small team of energetic students and subject matter experts.

ICT Profile and Digital Badge Experiments

The ICT Profile for College Students generated many projects, including two digital badge experiments, which attest mastery of digital skills. The fist took place in a situation of recognition of acquired competencies (RAC) in college; the other in regular day training. The system will be available to all colleges, in the DECclic/Moodle environment: colleges will award ICT Profile Badges to their students. They will also benefit from an institutional space within which they can award their own badges.

Even if the AQPC Symposium is highlighting this anniversary by taking a look at the accomplishments of the network, it is primarily focused on the present and the future - promoting recent innovations, current approaches that are being tested and examining the results of research that is being conducted within the colleges. In this way, Symposium attendees can explore the heritage that is being built day after day in the college network, and be inspired by it in order to enrich their own educational practice.

Meeting Students Where They’re At!

Kelly La Venture and Becki George of Northland College Wisconsin presented a workshop on hybrid instruction at the recent Canadian International Conference on Education (CICE) at Cape Breton University in Sydney, Nova Scotia from June 16-19, 2014. After their workshop, in conversation with Profweb’s Norm Spatz, they elaborated on their motivation for creating and teaching hybrid classes. Kelly’s and Becki’s remarks are testimonials that providing flexible learning approaches builds contentment among students – helping Quebec college students master ICT profile skills.

The active learning methods have in common of placing the students in the middle of the learning process. Their teachers can then also think about giving them a role in the planning of the evaluation. Active learning is inspired by real-life contexts that are meaningful for the students, which can increase their level of motivation for the tasks that are suggested to them. It encourages durable learnings rather than using only their short-term memory.
