Mobile Technology for Mobile Learning

No one questions the impact that information systems technology has had on pedagogical activities. Computer programs which allow classroom content to be digitized and information to be stored and shared individually or as part of a network all broaden the learning environment.  Therefore, computer labs, which are no longer the only places where pedagogical activities can be executed using information systems technology, are being progressively replaced by such innovations as the virtual classroom and the home office. Students now have the possibility of connecting to a network, with their laptops or desktops, in the classroom or at home.

The installation of Active Learning (AL) spaces in Quebec Colleges is an important part of the movement to help college teachers transform their pedagogy and to promote deeper learning for students. Profweb was recently invited to LaSalle College to visit their new Steelcase Active Learning room and to speak with teachers that are using an AL approach. LaSalle College is the only Canadian institution to have won a grant from Steelcase Education in 2016, which allowed the college to renovate one of their classrooms and acquire modular furniture and technology.

In search of pedagogical approaches that would create rich opportunities for peer learning, increase student motivation and encourage students to take an active role in the classroom,we found inspiration and innovation with the help of the Smartpen. Thanks to a SALTISE rant, awarded to us in February 2016,  we were able to begin experimenting with the Smartpen and we have observed positive preliminary results.

Meeting Students Where They’re At!

Kelly La Venture and Becki George of Northland College Wisconsin presented a workshop on hybrid instruction at the recent Canadian International Conference on Education (CICE) at Cape Breton University in Sydney, Nova Scotia from June 16-19, 2014. After their workshop, in conversation with Profweb’s Norm Spatz, they elaborated on their motivation for creating and teaching hybrid classes. Kelly’s and Becki’s remarks are testimonials that providing flexible learning approaches builds contentment among students – helping Quebec college students master ICT profile skills.

The active learning methods have in common of placing the students in the middle of the learning process. Their teachers can then also think about giving them a role in the planning of the evaluation. Active learning is inspired by real-life contexts that are meaningful for the students, which can increase their level of motivation for the tasks that are suggested to them. It encourages durable learnings rather than using only their short-term memory.
