It takes a great deal of energy to create synergy which, once it is in motion, becomes a source of energy in and of itself. In my three favourite presentations this year, the social aspects of education to energize both teaching and learning were critical. Lisa Deguire, Gina Lavine, Susan MacNeil and Norm Spatz (ESL Teachers from across Quebec), talked about creating synergy between multiple teachers in a diverse range of projects, using social networks (Facebook and Twitter), gamification (CourseCraft and ClassDojo) and thematic Web 2.0 tools (NewsActivist). They used the term ConNETivism to describe this type of cooperation in their workshop Move Over Constructivism, It’s Time for ”ConNETivism” (#309).

3D-print Technology for Smartphone-based Physics Experiments

I’m not that great at building things, which, I guess, is why I ended up being a physicist and not an engineer. As previously reported on Profweb, I have been running accelerometer experiments with smartphones to help my students learn physics concepts through digital-era equivalents of “real world” examples. With the help of students, we developed 3D-printed equipment to make these experiments more accessible to our growing network of teachers outside of our college.

4Mat, a Teaching Strategy Compatible with the Brain

You have probably heard about the Universal Design of Learning (UDL). It supposes that the human brain functions roughly the same way from one person to another, but that each person learns differently. This model therefore suggests to vary and differ pedagogical strategies in order to reach all types of learners.

In this article, I will present a model to you that is seemingly similar, that I was able to experiment with in the context of developing professional competencies. It is the model 4Mat (Four Matters), developed 30 years ago, and that aims at offering learning activities and a pedagogical sequence that takes the 4 main learning styles into account. The model 4Mat, as with UDL, can be applied to all learners, regardless of their age, because it is established from neuroscientific studies that define the role of each area of the brain in the process of learning.

Google Classroom to Support Sustainable Learning in the Dental Prosthesis Program

I teach in the Dental Prosthesis Program. During the winter session, I give the course Conception et confection de pièces squelettiques II to students in their 4th semester in the program. This course allows them to finish acquiring the skills essential for them to succeed the integration activity. However, the students do not have the opportunity to practice these skills between their 4th and 6th semester of studies. This means that 3rd year students sometimes have difficulty finding theoretical or practical notions from the year before. For this reason, I set out to find both, a way to ensure the safekeeping of course contents and a means of making the content easily accessible to the students.
