As many teachers’ professional universe is being turned on its head, I became curious to hear a teacher’s perspective on teaching at a distance. New resources are constantly being added to EDUQ.info, the open archive of the Centre de documentation collégiale (CDC). However, librarian Isabelle Laplante immediately thought of Profweb readers when she discovered Using Game-Based Learning Online – A Cookbook of Recipes from the eCampus Ontario Open Library. It's a digital book created by the University of Ottawa's Educational Games Group (The EGG). The book presents concrete ways to use gaming as a teaching strategy in a distance education course.

Teachers are sometimes reluctant to use smartphones as a tool for teaching and learning since they can be viewed as a source of distraction in the classroom. The Adaptech Research Network, which performs research on accessible technologies, spearheaded an Entente-Canada-Québec (ECQ) project to share approaches to integrating these omnipresent devices into teaching and learning. In September 2020, Profweb spoke to Anick Legault, a Psychology teacher and Adaptech Research Network Research Associate at Dawson who developed a series of video tutorials within the ECQ project designed to inspire teachers to use smartphones as part of their teaching practice.

Kelly La Venture and Becki George of Northland College Wisconsin presented a workshop on hybrid instruction at the recent Canadian International Conference on Education (CICE) at Cape Breton University in Sydney, Nova Scotia from June 16-19, 2014. After their workshop, in conversation with Profweb’s Norm Spatz, they elaborated on their motivation for creating and teaching hybrid classes. Kelly’s and Becki’s remarks are testimonials that providing flexible learning approaches builds contentment among students – helping Quebec college students master ICT profile skills.

The active learning methods have in common of placing the students in the middle of the learning process. Their teachers can then also think about giving them a role in the planning of the evaluation. Active learning is inspired by real-life contexts that are meaningful for the students, which can increase their level of motivation for the tasks that are suggested to them. It encourages durable learnings rather than using only their short-term memory.
