What is ‘Unlocking Research’?

Unlocking Research is a guide developed by the library staff at the Saint-Lambert Campus of Champlain College to help college level students navigate their way through the research process from the initial definition and development of a research topic to the final citation of sources in the bibliography. Unlike many similar tools, Unlocking Research targets the college level student, avoiding topics such as how to write theses, which are too advanced, and focuses on topics where college students often have difficulties. For example, there is information on how to recognize the elements of a bibliography because college students trying to do a bibliography may not recognize the difference between the article author and the editor of a book or the title of a book and the title of the chapter. Unlocking Research and associated Glossary were created with the help of a grant from the Entente Canada Québec.

This week, at our editorial meeting, we had a shining example of the value of the APOP U R on-Line Conference. The meeting was held using the Via Interface. Having gone to the conference with the Via Interface, we all agreed that the technology was perfect for our meetings, particularly when it is so inexpensive. I heard that a one hour session may cost as low as five dollars per participant. What a pleasure to see the expressions and body language of the other people on the Animaweb team!

Meeting Students Where They’re At!

Kelly La Venture and Becki George of Northland College Wisconsin presented a workshop on hybrid instruction at the recent Canadian International Conference on Education (CICE) at Cape Breton University in Sydney, Nova Scotia from June 16-19, 2014. After their workshop, in conversation with Profweb’s Norm Spatz, they elaborated on their motivation for creating and teaching hybrid classes. The active learning methods have in common of placing the students in the middle of the learning process. Their teachers can then also think about giving them a role in the planning of the evaluation. Active learning is inspired by real-life contexts that are meaningful for the students, which can increase their level of motivation for the tasks that are suggested to them. It encourages durable learnings rather than using only their short-term memory.
