Instagram: A Social Media Tool for The College Classroom

Published October 25, 2018  |  Multidisciplinary

Susan MacNeil Editor, Profweb

A picture is worth a thousand words as the old saying goes, but with more than 400 million users, half of which are under 30, the photo sharing platform Instagram can be worth a lot more than a thousand words if you are a teacher. Instagram is the mobile app that allows users to share the pictures or videos they have taken. In class, Instagram offers a visual alternative to students who are often overloaded with texts. In an anatomy class for example, isn’t it easier for student students to learn about the structure of a bone from a picture rather than a long description?

The Zotero Bibliographic Management Tool

Published December 7, 2014  |  Human Sciences

Dany Thibault Teacher, Collège Montmorency

The Zotero bibliographic management tool is free and easy to use. It is also versatile since it can output various bibliographic styles adapting to different contexts. It addresses both teachers and students in both college and university communities. Zotero becomes even more effective when users create a free account on Zotero.org. By creating such an account, users can make a backup of bibliographical documents on the web, and can synchronize documents between multiple computers. Through these accounts, it also becomes possible to create groups to share sources. This is the perfect tool to optimize team work!

Google Classroom to Support Sustainable Learning in the Dental Prosthesis Program

Published November 30, 2017  |  Dental Technology

Julie Jacob Teacher, Cégep Édouard-Montpetit

I teach in the Dental Prosthesis Program. During the winter session, I give the course Conception et confection de pièces squelettiques II to students in their 4th semester in the program. This course allows them to finish acquiring the skills essential for them to succeed the integration activity. However, the students do not have the opportunity to practice these skills between their 4th and 6th semester of studies. This means that 3rd year students sometimes have difficulty finding theoretical or practical notions from the year before. For this reason, I set out to find both, a way to ensure the safekeeping of course contents and a means of making the content easily accessible to the students.

The new approach of the 2014 ICT Student Profile has significant advantages. A transversal profile for "all programs, all colleges," it gives more flexibility to programs on the choice of software applications to use to master a skill, taking variations from one curriculum to another into account.

Evernote and Teaching

Published September 21, 2014  |  Chemistry

Carole Emilie Baddour, PhD Teacher, Collégial international Sainte-Anne

Like all addictions, it started innocently. I heard so much talk about Evernote from others, that my journey simply began out of curiosity. I wanted to know for myself what it was and how to use it. A few years ago, I started using Evernote for my personal affairs and I fell in love. It was such a powerful organizational tool and I was hooked. Evernote allowed me to have everything I could possibly need (such as documents, audio files, annotations and website clippings) stored in once place and synced across every device I used. I loved Evernote so much in my personal life that I decided to bring it into my chemistry classes.

Andy Van Drom Editor, Profweb

In 2018, cell phones, tablets and computers combined with free applications or software give us the ability to create high quality video and broadcast it within moments. The internet gives us access to vast free video resources. Yet in spite of these technological innovations, students still consume digital media mostly passively in classroom settings. Three free online platforms allow you to create different types of video-based tasks that engage your students more actively.

Active Learning

Jean Desjardins Learning Technology Advisor, Collège Sainte-Anne
Isabelle Senécal Director of Teaching, of Pedagogical Innovation and of International Development, Collège Sainte-Anne

The active learning methods have in common of placing the students in the middle of the learning process. Their teachers can then also think about giving them a role in the planning of the evaluation. Active learning is inspired by real-life contexts that are meaningful for the students, which can increase their level of motivation for the tasks that are suggested to them. It encourages durable learnings rather than using only their short-term memory.
