Using Action Research to Create an Inter-collegial Student Learning Community

Having collaborated on past endeavours, we were excited about our latest initiative that would bring together students from different colleges, to work together on a common project. With help from an Entente-Canada-Québec (ECQ) grant, we were able to implement our project – Action Research: Learning Communities in Sustainable Development. The main objectives were to engage students in action research, related to sustainable development, and to participate in a learning community using an Internet based platform. The theme of the project made it very accessible, touching courses from various English second language classes, to geography, humanities, social science, science and more!

Transition to Electronic Marking with iAnnotate

Are you feeling ready to make the move to correcting assignments electronically? Are you overwhelmed by the number of tools that exist? This article will explain one teacher’s experience with an application she has been using for several years. Anna Dera, a Biology Teacher at CEGEP Champlain St. Lawrence wanted a tool that made the transition to marking electronically simple; something that allowed her to continue writing notes, “by hand”. She began marking electronically on a laptop with a touch screen and a special stylus pen. Soon after, she started using an iPad, and in her search for an application that would allow her to continue this new electronic marking technique, she discovered iAnnotate, which has remained her marking tool of choice for over 6 years.

An International Project to Develop Students’ Intercultural Skills During an Internship Abroad

Starting in 2018 and for a period of 3 years, our respective colleges will be involved in the ELISSE project (E-Learning for Intercultural Skills in Social Education). This international project in social services came about in answer to an urgent need in terms of the development of intercultural skills for college and university students who were interning abroad. In addition to the field reality, the social codes and the modes of communication in the internship setting (including with the supervisors) greatly differ from one culture to the next and constitute additional factors that can cause students to lose their bearings. The ELISSE project aims to improve distance educational support in particular through the development of tools created by all of the institutions partnering in the project.

On-line Welcome Sessions to Promote Student Perseverance: A Pilot Project at Cégep à distance

As part of REFAD professional development workshop in early 2018, a small team from Cégep à distance came to present a pilot project within the organization’s Tutoring Services sector. Cégep à distance offers more than 150 self-contained asynchronous courses. Even if the majority of students adapt well to this mode of training, others seem to run into difficulties and do not complete their course. Among the factors that contribute to students dropping out are the feelings of isolation, having an unusual schedule or the students perception of self-efficacy which seem to be the greatest challenges.

Researching Best Presentation Practices and Sharing of PowerPoints

Presentation software is a ubiquitous part of lecturing in the college network. When shared with students, the presentation slides can be a very useful tool for students, and particularly for those who have special needs. The Adaptech Research Network recently conducted a series of focus groups on presentation approaches and sharing of slides that involved students, teachers and professional staff. The team invited Profweb to a meeting at the end of the Fall 2017 semester to share their initial findings.

Blended Learning to Teach Ethics to Future Engineers

At Concordia University, I have been teaching the ENGR 201 Professional Practice and Responsibility for some time, which is a mandatory rite of passage for any student who wishes to become an engineer. This means that there are a large number of students, which seems to be growing every year. Given this growth, we wanted to see if we could consolidate a couple of sections into one section to meet the demand. The course is offered in the fall, winter and summer semesters, and each section has about 200 students. Our first experiment was with 200 students in one section who were all enrolled in the blended course. We are now regularly offering the blended course with 400 students each semester.

In recent years, we have observed a growing interest in the college network for the educational potential of virtual reality. In 2014, the Vitrine technologie-éducation presented a virtual laboratory on the topic, before organizing exploratory activities for college IT-reps in 2016 and 2017. However, we had little feedback on the actual use of this technology by teachers.

Clinical Simulations In Nursing: Debriefing and Development Of Students’ Clinical Judgement Abilities

The project of clinical immersion simulation at Cégep de Sainte-Foy came into being following the withdrawal of the ECOS (Examen clinique objectif structuré) that the Ordre des infirmières et infirmiers du Québec used for the licensing exam. This exam served to assess the clinical judgement of graduating students in practical situations. Our department also used scenarios of the ECOS from previous years to assess the students at the end of each session while at the same time allowing them to prepare for the licensing exam at the end of their college courses.

The ADTE Delivers a Liberating Experience with the 2016 Edition of the Colloque Libre

The ADTE managed a veritable coup, holding its annual conference on free and open source software known as the Colloque Libre on March 17th, 2016 at Dawson College in Montreal. The event organizers invited internationally-renowned free software advocate Richard Stallman to provide the keynote address for the conference. What follows is an account of the day, which was attended by staff and administrators from all three levels of education in Quebec as well as representatives from the Ministère de l'Éducation et de l'Enseignement supérieur.

The active learning methods have in common of placing the students in the middle of the learning process. Their teachers can then also think about giving them a role in the planning of the evaluation. Active learning is inspired by real-life contexts that are meaningful for the students, which can increase their level of motivation for the tasks that are suggested to them. It encourages durable learnings rather than using only their short-term memory.

Google Classroom to Support Sustainable Learning in the Dental Prosthesis Program

I teach in the Dental Prosthesis Program. During the winter session, I give the course Conception et confection de pièces squelettiques II to students in their 4th semester in the program. This course allows them to finish acquiring the skills essential for them to succeed the integration activity. However, the students do not have the opportunity to practice these skills between their 4th and 6th semester of studies. This means that 3rd year students sometimes have difficulty finding theoretical or practical notions from the year before. For this reason, I set out to find both, a way to ensure the safekeeping of course contents and a means of making the content easily accessible to the students.
