From Lecture to Online Course: Transforming a Regular Course into a Distance Learning Format

In 2012, I developed the course Gérer ses finances personnelles (Managing Personal Finances), a complementary course in the general education stream at Cégep Édouard-Montpetit. This course is an introduction to managing personal finances and is intended for students from all backgrounds who do not have any administration courses in their academic program. Since its inception, I have been giving this course in a traditional face-to-face format, combining lectures and discussion periods.

Learning ESL in an Active Learning Classroom at the Cégep de la Gaspésie et des Îles

The Cégep de la Gaspésie et des Îles (CGIM) received funding from the Entente Canada-Québec (ECQ) for a special project that aimed to equip the college’s four campuses with active learning classrooms (ALCs) and to develop training workshops that would encourage teachers to develop active-learning teaching practices in English as a second language (ESL). I spoke with Anne-Marie Lafortune, the project leader, about active learning activities for ESL and active learning classrooms.

As an education professor, I’ve had the opportunity to help teachers develop online and hybrid courses. One of the most common questions people asked me was, “How do I convert my face-to-face course into an online course?” The truth is, you cannot convert it. Learning isn’t like a file that converts between a .doc and a PDF and a Google Doc. We can’t simply substitute new tools and do the same exact activity. But what if we chose a different approach? What if we asked, “How do I transform my course?” rather than “How do I convert it?” The following are a few ideas to consider as you shift toward online / distance learning.

In the fall 2019 semester, my students in the course Langue anglaise et culture (English 102) read Born a Crime by Trevor Noah, which details the author’s growing up in his native South Africa during the Apartheid era. To help students connect with the book’s subject matter and social context in a more concrete and meaningful manner, I turned the reading experience into a multisensory experience by designing learning activities that involved virtual reality (VR) and audio content.

Teaching Students to Manage Projects with ProjectLibre

ProjectLibre is an open source software that is useful for creating project schedules. Michel Bélanger, a teacher at the Collège Montmorency, and many of his colleagues use ProjectLibre for several of their courses in the Civil Engineering Technology program. He uses the software to show students how to create a project schedule by sequencing and ordering tasks with the objective of evaluating the time and cost to run the project. I had the opportunity to discuss this approach with Michel at the beginning of the Winter 2020 semester.

The active learning methods have in common of placing the students in the middle of the learning process. Their teachers can then also think about giving them a role in the planning of the evaluation. Active learning is inspired by real-life contexts that are meaningful for the students, which can increase their level of motivation for the tasks that are suggested to them. It encourages durable learnings rather than using only their short-term memory.

Teachers’ Use of ICTs: What Do Students Think?

In the context of a research project funded by the “Fonds de Recherche du Québec sur la société et la culture” (FRQRSC), 311 students from Dawson College and Cégep André-Laurendeau were surveyed online, in French or English, about their teachers’ practices in the use of ICTs and cyber-learning. This survey allowed the researchers to collect data on the teachers’ use of technology as well as the students’ level of satisfaction regarding this use.
