Videos, Google Forms and the Flipped Classroom

It was a bit of a fluke that I integrated the flipped classroom approach into my pedagogy during the winter of 2012. In the beginning, it was a solution to ensure that classes would start up again after the student strike. Since then I have been using this method by choice and for the pleasure of the experience of flipping some of my classes. With the right tools and the support of the ICT Education Advisor from my college, the transition to a flipped classroom went very well.

Oops! I Accidentally Flipped my Classroom

Nathaniel Lasry and Michael Dugdale unintentionally flipped their classrooms by trying to enrich delivery of just-in-time teaching in electricity and magnetism courses. Students were asked to do reading assignments accompanied by some short open-ended questions. They arrived at the lecture having read the material, and having acquired a vision of what parts were easy and what parts were difficult for them. Although this activity didn't replace the lectures; it opened up a surprising amount of time in class for active learning activities.

To diversify my teaching strategies, I use online videos. These explain concepts in a smart way through images and simple demonstrations that facilitate understanding. I use these videos in a flipped classroom approach or as part of a self-directed learning approach. Although I find the content of the videos relevant, I am not always satisfied with the students’ level of engagement. I was introduced to the Edpuzzle platform, which really meets my needs. Here’s why.

The Cégep de la Gaspésie et des Îles (CGIM) received funding from the Entente Canada-Québec (ECQ) for a special project that aimed to equip the college’s four campuses with active learning classrooms (ALCs) and to develop training workshops that would encourage teachers to develop active-learning teaching practices in English as a second language (ESL). I spoke with Anne-Marie Lafortune, the project leader, about active learning activities for ESL and active learning classrooms.

Meeting Students Where They’re At!

Kelly La Venture and Becki George of Northland College Wisconsin presented a workshop on hybrid instruction at the recent Canadian International Conference on Education (CICE) at Cape Breton University in Sydney, Nova Scotia from June 16-19, 2014. After their workshop, in conversation with Profweb’s Norm Spatz, they elaborated on their motivation for creating and teaching hybrid classes. Kelly’s and Becki’s remarks are testimonials that providing flexible learning approaches builds contentment among students – helping Quebec college students master ICT profile skills.
