The Physical Education department at LaSalle College is small; there are 3 full-time and 4 part-time teachers. When we decided to create our own, tailor-made course materials, several members of the teaching team got on board. It has taken the shape of a digital format textbook, or eBook, which we called Moving Toward the Benefits of Physical Activity. Cindy Cook and Marc Beauchamp did the writing and content-checking, Samantha Haas edited every chapter, and Sylvain Desmarteau did the Word formatting, layout, graphic search, creation and set up of the hosting site (presently a Google site).

The General Education component of all DCS/DEC programs includes 3 Physical Education courses. For many years, Physical Education teachers in colleges across the province have tested the physical fitness of students in their classes. Thanks to the financial assistance of the Entente Canada-Québec, and the project leadership of Phys. Ed Teachers Josée Perron and Tony Iachetta at Marianopolis College, the groundwork is under way to create an electronic physical fitness profile portal that students can use across their three courses.

Staying active and leading a healthy lifestyle is one of the best ways of finding balance, and a great way to live a happy and fulfilled life. Not finding time to exercise is a common excuse that we all use. Despite this challenge, it is one of the most important things you can do for yourself. One way that I motivate myself when I exercise is using technology to help me stay on track. There are a number of apps I have been using with students in my Physical Education courses, 3 of which I would like to share with you.

At the turn of the century, seeing obesity, cardiovascular illnesses and type II diabetes rates that were skyrocketing within the population, the ITA (Institut de technologie agroalimentaire) decided to take on the issue of physical inactivity that was, and still is, affecting our society. We decided to focus the physical education courses which are mandatory for the DCS/DEC on adopting healthy life habits - more specifically focusing on regular physical activity (3 workout sessions per week).

Can free mobile applications such as Runkeeper and Runtastic help ensure that students in the 103 Physical Education class are engaging in the physical activity they are supposed to outside of class? This is what I believe after testing it with my students and studying the topic for my master's essay [in French]. By also asking my students to send me pictures of themselves while they do their physical activity, I get authentic results and, most importantly, I make the course more motivating for the students.

Kathryn Morrison got an opportunity to teach in an active learning classroom and found the difference unbelievable because as much as she tried to implement active learning in a traditional classroom, the structure of the room itself created logistics to overcome.
