Hubert.ai Chats with Your Students to Obtain Course Feedback

While obtaining student feedback has been an integral part of my teaching practices from the very beginning, it was never a truly satisfying or enjoyable activity. Over the years, I experimented with different ways of obtaining feedback, most of which were either very labour-intensive (open-ended questions) or overly formalised (multiple-choice questions or ratings). The advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) has reached a point where chatbots can now handle text-based conversations and analyze them. This term, I am experimenting with Hubert.ai, a platform that harnesses the power of AI to obtain meaningful feedback through chat sessions with my students. So far, this has proven to be an effective and engaging format for everyone involved.

If you teach in the Québec college system, chances are that you work with Omnivox. While MIO and LÉA are excellent for communicating with students quickly and easily, they are sub-optimal when it comes to sharing large quantities material. Luckily for teachers, there are ways to work around Omnivox’ cumbersome system, for instance, with the use of mind maps. Mindmeister, a web-based mind mapping application, provides a user-friendly interface to create efficient and aesthetically pleasing mind maps to share an infinite quantity of pedagogical resources from one link.

International Baccalaureate (IB) students are generally motivated or they would not have chosen to go into such an intensive program. I wanted to give these students an experience where they would be working on their own, at their own pace and speaking with authentic Anglophones, a rarity in Trois-Rivières in order to deal with the multiplicity of language skills in my IB class. I knew that the Entente Canada-Quebec could provide a grant which would enable an actual immersion trip. All manner of information technology including Facebook and chat as well as a willing partner in a French as Second Language course at Cégep de Gaspésie des Îles made for a great way to realize these goals.

Meeting Students Where They’re At!

Kelly La Venture and Becki George of Northland College Wisconsin presented a workshop on hybrid instruction at the recent Canadian International Conference on Education (CICE) at Cape Breton University in Sydney, Nova Scotia from June 16-19, 2014. After their workshop, in conversation with Profweb’s Norm Spatz, they elaborated on their motivation for creating and teaching hybrid classes. Kelly’s and Becki’s remarks are testimonials that providing flexible learning approaches builds contentment among students – helping Quebec college students master ICT profile skills.

The active learning methods have in common of placing the students in the middle of the learning process. Their teachers can then also think about giving them a role in the planning of the evaluation.
