Digital Slideshows in Class

For many teachers, their first foray towards integrating Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) into their pedagogical practice comes through the use of digital presentation software (such as Microsoft PowerPoint) as a visual support for their lectures. Nowadays, these digital slideshows are undoubtedly the most common technology in college-level classrooms. This tool has become the norm and teachers who do not use it are becoming few and far between. Presentation software such as PowerPoint, Apple Keynote, LibreOffice Impress and Prezi all have interesting features (with the last two being freely available over the Internet). That said, they also contain shortcomings and traps that should be avoided. This in-depth report presents various uses of presentation software in class along with tips and advice for using slideshows within an educational context.

PowerPoint is one of those ubiquitous software programs few tend to laud. We’ve all sat through at least one tedious presentation commonly referred to as “death by PowerPoint.” Yet because of its relative user-friendliness, many teachers still rely on it as part of a lecture or to share content with students. Rather than introducing alternatives to the slideshow format, this article presents 2 applications that work hand-in-hand with PowerPoint to make it a more effective, dynamic and inclusive experience: SlideLizard and Hypersay (which also works with Google Slides).

This document is the end result of a general call launched on the IT Reps list in February 2015. The survey probed practices in distance education in the college network. Based on the answers given, Profweb asked some of the respondents to discuss the issues of distance education, its pedagogical challenges, and strategies likely to facilitate its deployment in the college network. Eight respondents participated in developing this topic. Andréanne Turgeon gathered their comments in telephone interviews and videoconferences.

Moodle Platform Moderating the CERAC Community of Practice

At the Sommet sur l’Enseignement supérieur, in February 2013, it was announced that four CERACs (Centre d’expertise en reconnaissance des acquis et des compétences) would be created within the college network. The CEGEPs awarded a CERAC were: Cégep de Drummondville, Cégep de Ste-Foy, Cégep Marie-Victorin and Champlain Regional College. Over the last year, my colleagues and I have worked to design and develop a virtual space for communication and collaboration between these centers using Moodle (LMS). The goal was to create and support an online community of practice. The platform provides a space to bring together hundreds of pedagogical advisors in Recognition of Acquired Competencies (RAC), nearly twenty employees of the four CERACs and representatives from MESRS (Ministère de l’Enseignement supérieur, de la Recherche et de la Science).

An Interactive Tool to Help Students Avoid Plagiarism

Students in virtually any college course that includes oral and written assignments are confronted with the concept of plagiarism. In spite of repeated exposure to policies and guidelines, many students still struggle to fully grasp what plagiarism is, especially when committed unintentionally. In order to increase student awareness and autonomy in regard to plagiarism, Cégep Marie-Victorin’s Service du développement pédagogique, des programmes et de la recherche has elaborated a visual, interactive tool that helps students make the critical decisions necessary to avoid plagiarizing. It is available in both French and English.

To diversify my teaching strategies, I use online videos. These explain concepts in a smart way through images and simple demonstrations that facilitate understanding. I use these videos in a flipped classroom approach or as part of a self-directed learning approach. Although I find the content of the videos relevant, I am not always satisfied with the students’ level of engagement. I was introduced to the Edpuzzle platform, which really meets my needs. Meeting Students Where They’re At!

Kelly La Venture and Becki George of Northland College Wisconsin presented a workshop on hybrid instruction at the recent Canadian International Conference on Education (CICE) at Cape Breton University in Sydney, Nova Scotia from June 16-19, 2014.
